Daily Reading March 23 2010 from Hebrews 4:1-13 NIV

Day 72

Hebrews 4:1-13 NIV

1 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.2 For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith. 3 Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, “So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ”And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world.4 For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “And on the seventh day God rested from all his work.” 5 And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.” 6 It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience. 7 Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.9 There remains, then, a Sabbath‑rest for the people of God;10 for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double‑edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

The Word of God is...
I just wanted to focus on the last section of this scripture. The Word of God is "living and active" "Sharper than any double-edged sword". The Word of God "penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow." The Word of God "it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart".

Living and active -
Many people read books and novels that seem to come to life as they begin to envision some element of the character's life and relate to the emotions of the passages. The Bible is different, it doesn't simply inspire our imaginations though it can inspire us to dream bigger. God's Word is a live because it has the power to make the dead live! The Word is alive because it never grows old or irrelevant. It is active because the Word continues to work as generation after generation discovers the truth of the Word. It is active because it isn't just some man inspired words on a page but it is God's Word made alive by the Holy Spirit. We read God's Word again and again but always seem to find something new and relevant for our situation. Even when we pull out the Old Testament classics that we have been reading since we were children we seem to find new nuggets that challenge and inspire us.

Sharper than a double-edged sword -
The Word of God is like a sword because it can cut away the undesirable areas of our heart. The Word trims away the flesh and awakens the spirit to it's truths. The Word of God cuts to the quick when we are lost or guilty of a sin against God, this sharp word inspires us to confess and repent.

The Word Penetrates and divides -
God's Word can break through even the hardest of hearts as the Holy Spirit directs and convicts. The Word penetrates and divides, since God communicates with us spirit to spirit the Word of God is contrary to the flesh and appeals directly to the spirit. This Word is absurd to natural thinking but when it penetrates to the spirit it has the ability to awaken the dead and cause us to experience the new birth.

Judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart -
The Word of God is our guide and it judges us when we read it with an open heart. It is through this judgment that we are able to escape a final judgment and be found without Christ. The Word quickly reveals the character of God and exposes the weak areas of our spiritual walk. The Word of God speaks to the heart of man, it reveals the purpose of our hearts.

This is powerful Word that we are dealing with tonight. Paul has said it all here by showing us the importance of God's Word. It is important to read it and then digest it. It is important that we learn this Word and speak it. This Word quickens our faith. The faith that pleases God. While no one can mandate that we read God's Word we can say that in order to grow in Christ as we should be we cannot simply depend upon Sunday morning sermons to give us all the Word we need.

Daily Reading March 22 2010 from Hebrews 3:7-19

Day 71

Hebrews 3:7-19 NIV
7 So, as the Holy Spirit says:
“Today, if you hear his voice,

8 do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion,
during the time of testing in the desert,

9 where your fathers tested and tried me
and for forty years saw what I did.

10 That is why I was angry with that generation,
and I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,
and they have not known my ways.’

11 So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ”
12 See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness.14 We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first.

15 As has just been said:
“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion.”
16 Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?17 And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the desert?18 And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed?

19 So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.

Daily Reading March 21 2010 from Hebrews 3:1-6 NIV

Day 70

Hebrews 3:1-6 NIV

1 Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess.2 He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God's house.3 Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself.4 For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.5 Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house, testifying to what would be said in the future. 6 But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.

Fix Your Thoughts on Christ -
This certainly isn't difficult to do if you are follower of God. We have our eyes fixed upon Christ because without Him and His sacrifice we would have no means to a relationship with the Father. Paul says Christ was faithful, found worthy of great honor, a faithful son over God's house. Notice Paul's first greeting "holy brothers" this signifies the relationship we have as believers adopted into the family of God because of the shed blood of Jesus on Calvary. Paul says to focus on Christ because His name is above all names. Paul mentions Moses but insists that Christ was and is greater. To many Jews of that day and even today that would have been blasphemy. Moses was their father but Jesus pointed them the way to the FATHER and when they rejected the SON Jesus died and opened the family to ALL who would believe and call on the name of Jesus. Jesus is over the house of God and we are a part of this house Paul says "if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast." So Paul says to not only fix our thought on Christ but to continue in our faith til the end. Paul said in other scripture that he died daily, in other words being a follower of Christ being a follower is a daily decision. Paul isn't looking for half-hearted confessions but whole-hearted daily commitment to the cause of Christ. Where are your thoughts? I want to be found focused and fixed on Christ.

Daily Reading March 16 2010 from Titus 3 NIV

Day 65

Titus 3:1-15 NIV
1 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, 2 to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.
3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared,5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone. 9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. 11 You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self‑condemned. 12 As soon as I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, because I have decided to winter there.13 Do everything you can to help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way and see that they have everything they need. 14 Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order that they may provide for daily necessities and not live unproductive lives. 15 Everyone with me sends you greetings. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all.

Daily Reading March 15 2010 from Titus 2:1-15 NIV

Day 64

Titus 2:1-15 NIV

1 You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine. 2 Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self‑controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. 3 Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.4 Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self‑controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. 6 Similarly, encourage the young men to be self‑controlled.7 In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us. 9 Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, 10 and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive. 11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self‑controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,13 while we wait for the blessed hope–the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. 15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.

Set them an Example -
This chapter is interesting because Titus is instructed to teach those older and younger than him and then to show them all an example. Paul says "show them an example by doing what is good" show the older men, younger men, older women and the younger women. Paul goes on and says teach the slaves to honor their masters and not to talk back, not to steal from them, and to let them know you can be completely trusted. So not only is Titus being exhorted to be an example he is to teach others regardless of their age or social status to also set an example for others. Paul says to say "No" to ungodliness and things of the world, to live a self-controlled life, and to be godly in every manner of living. Just as Paul taught Timothy to be an example he is saying the same to Titus. Paul didn't care about age or status he was certain that all believers could live a life of example before others. When he speaks here about slaves setting examples for their masters we realize just how serious the Apostle is about the subject. I would guess if he were writing to you and I today he would say very similar words. He might ask are you living a life that sets an example, a standard for others? A life that glorifies God? Are you temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, sound in your faith, walking in love? Are you pure, kind, and an example in integrity? Paul's standard for believers was great because he understood that Christ had already made it possible for us to live a life of self-control, a life submitted to God. Perhaps we should take some time to ponder our own lives. Am I living a life of example? This very direct speech cuts to the point and challenges us in our manner of living.

Daily Reading March 14 2010 from Titus 1 NIV

Day 63

Titus 1:1-16 NIV

1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God's elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness–2 a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, 3 and at his appointed season he brought his word to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior, 4 To Titus, my true son in our common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior. 5 The reason I left you in Crete was that you might straighten out what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.6 An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient.7 Since an overseer is entrusted with God's work, he must be blameless–not overbearing, not quick‑tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain.8 Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self‑controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. 9 He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. 10 For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group.11 They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach–and that for the sake of dishonest gain.12 Even one of their own prophets has said, “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.”13 This testimony is true. Therefore, rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith14 and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of those who reject the truth.15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. 16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

Actions speak louder than words -
Today we are beginning the Epistle of Titus. Paul again is writing to one of his proteges and this time it is Titus. Just as Paul sent Timothy to the Ephesians Titus has been sent to Crete to organize the church and to appoint its leaders from city to city. You will notice here that Paul uses the same language in reference to Titus as he did Timothy, "my true son in our common faith". Paul was obviously close to Titus and had entrusted him to go and help complete the work he had begun. Paul warns Titus that false teachers are present in Crete and have been successful in leading entire homes astray with their false teachings. Paul says they are "liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons" and says to rebuke them so they will come to a more sound faith and reject the "Jewish myths." He goes on to describe impure people "their minds and consciences are corrupted. They claim to know God, but by their actions deny Him. They are detestable and unfit for doing anything good." As you can see Paul is being the usual politically correct character we have grown accustomed to in his writings. By this time in our reading we have come to know that this Apostle pulls no punches in speaking his mind. There is so much to be learned from these writings as they are direct letters to the churches and the individuals who have been given the task of further establishment of individuals churches. Paul goes over what to look for in leadership for these fledgling churches that he has entrusted to the care of Titus. We would do well to read these lists of attributes and strive to live a life comparable to the standard Paul is invoking.

Things like:

* being blameless
* not quick-tempered
* not given to drunkeness
* not violent
* not out for dishonest gain
* hospitable
* lovers of good
* self-controlled
* holy and disciplined
* sound in doctrine

This is quite a list and no doubt it would be a daunting task to live up to any such list. While I don't believe in developing lists for individuals to live by I do believe that God can help us to grow in Him as we live in obedience. As we seek His will and come to know His voice we begin to live out His will for our lives. When we hear and know His voice we then begin to please Him because we bear the fruit of obedience. Knowing His voice helps us to become increasingly sensitive to the small nudges of the Holy Spirit. This Spirit within us helps us to know what is acceptable to God and convicts us when we stray from the plan. Notice I used the word convicts and not condemns. Remember, it is satan that accuses and wants to condemn us. We often participate with him in these accusations by not forgiving ourselves. The Spirit of God quietly convicts us and when we act in obedience we are quick to repent and turn to God. Paul wasn't telling Titus to look for perfect individuals just those who knew God and were seeking to be more like Christ. Those concerned about their character who were unhappy when they hurt the name of Jesus with their disobedience. We need more individuals like this in our churches and society today. Jesus made a way for us to be righteous before the Father and a way for us to overcome the flesh! Are you striving for holiness in your daily life? Not condemning yourself when you miss Him but repenting and submitting your all to His care? If so God is pleased with the life you have offered unto Him. After all our life is our reasonable sacrifice! Just as Paul said that some claim to know God but their actions tell a different story I want people to know that I know God through my actions. I want to bear fruit to where there is no question as to whom I serve.

Pastor Larry

Daily Reading March 13 2010 from 2 Timothy 4:9-22 NIV

Day 62

2 Timothy 4:9-22 NIV

9 Do your best to come to me quickly,10 for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry.12 I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments. 14 Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done. 15 You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message. 16 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.17 But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion's mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 19 Greet Priscilla and Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus.20 Erastus stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus sick in Miletus. 21 Do your best to get here before winter. Eubulus greets you, and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers. 22 The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.

Final Words -
Paul writes this last section like a farewell speech. He begins with "do your best to come to me quickly" you can almost see some desperation in this writing as the persecution that Paul has faced for his entire ministry is coming to a head. Paul writes about how his friends have deserted him; "at my first defense, no one came to my supports, but everyone deserted me", Paul has obviously suffered from his imprisonment and is longing to see those whom he loves and of course those who love him. Paul says though everyone deserted him the Lord was beside him and delivered him from sure death from the "lion's mouth". Paul knows that his life has been and will be spared until he has completed the work God has called him to do. Remember, Paul went to Jerusalem warned, knowing that when he went he would be accused and persecuted. Even after his friends begged him to not go he went because this was God's plan for his life. Though we have this knowledge we also must understand that even knowing we are in God's perfect will doesn't completely console us in times of trial. Being in God's will certainly does help us when we do face hard times. Paul shows his humanity in this passage of scripture as he longs to surround himself with some who would encourage him. I have heard many say that the Apostle Paul wrote arrogantly and I too can see where this school of thought comes from, though I tend to disagree. Paul was confident in His God and confident in where he was going and what he was doing. This can certainly sound arrogant as so many of us struggle and question where we are and where we are going. Paul had such a relationship with God that he heard God's voice and obeyed. We too have the ability to know God's will as we become listeners. Do as Paul did, have an intimate relationship with God and quickly obey His voice. Surround yourself with those who share your faith and passion. Encourage others and surround yourself with though who live to encourage as well. This passage just goes to show the need we all have for friends and companions as we walk with the Lord. Seek out those who need encouragement. Look for signs of those who are discouraged in their walk and lift them in prayer and with words of encouragement.

Daily Reading March 12 2010 from 2 Timothy 3:10-17 NIV

Day 61

It appears I posted today's post yesterday so to remedy the mistake I am posting yesterday's scripture post today. Sorry for the confusion.

2 Timothy 3:10-17 NIV
10 You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance,11 persecutions, sufferings–what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,13 while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.16 All Scripture is God‑breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

But as for you!
Paul begins this section talking about what Timothy has witnessed in his life. His teachings, faith, love, persecutions, etc... He then adds "yet the Lord rescued me from all of them" Paul continues by saying that everyone who lives for God will be persecuted for the cause. Paul them begins to talk of evil men and how they continue to grow more and more evil as they are deceived. The next line is where I wish to focus today. "But as for you", Continue, keep going, don't stop, don't get discouraged or sidetracked. Continue in what you have learned, continue in the Word which Paul says "are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus." Sometimes staying on track is very difficult. We start out chasing after God because of this new found relationship and if not careful our fire begins to dim. We have to continue to dwell on the great gift we have been given and continue communing with God. Continue having intimate alone time with Him, times of quiet, and personal worship sessions. Continue being thankful even in times of difficulty. Paul emphasized continuing in the holy Scriptures because as he says "all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the man of God must be thoroughly equipped. We can often tell where we are in our relationship with God by our daily reading and prayer time. Are you continuing in this relationship, growing daily in the Word and prayer time? Are you continuing by reading the Word and thus growing your faith?

Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. NIV

But as for you and me we must continue with God staying hot and not luke-warm, pursuing God.

Blessings,

Pastor Larry

Daily Reading March 11 2010 from 2 Timothy 4:1-8 NIV

Day 60

2 Tim 4:1-8 NIV

1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage–with great patience and careful instruction.3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. 6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure.7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day–and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Preach the Word, desire the Word!
Today we have an interesting section of scripture as Paul writes some of his final instruction to Timothy. Paul charges Timothy to preach the word and then goes on to say that a time will come when men will not desire to hear the truth of God's Word but will gather under those willing to compromise the gospel and preach what the audience wants to hear. This passage then becomes a command to both preacher and listener; preach the word and desire to hear God's Word. We know that it is the truth of God's Word that will make us free so then the distorting of that Word must bring about bondage. He says that teachers who compromise will amass large audiences who have turned aside from the truth.

Paul then gives Timothy some advice:

1. "keep your head in all situations"
2. "endure hardship"
3. "do the work of an evangelist"
4. "discharge all the duties of your ministry"

We can draw some conclusions from this advice. Timothy is going to be tested, he is going to face hardships as he stays true to the truth, he will need to be a ready evangelist to save some, and he will need to continue diligently completing all the duties of ministry in spite of the hardships and tests he will endure.

Paul's Good Fight of Faith -
Paul closes the section making Timothy aware of the struggles he had endured. "I have fought the good fight", I am being poured out like a drink offering", "the time has come for my departure". Paul is beginning his goodbye to his son in the faith and leaving behind a reminder of what is required of a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul continue to remind Timothy to stay on task and be prepared for the opposition he will surely face. Paul concludes with the promise; "there is in store for me a crown of righteousness" he says the Lord "will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing." Keep fighting Timothy, believers of every generation because once this life is over there is an award waiting greater than we can anticipate or imagine.

If you're a teacher/preacher are you preaching the Word?
Believer are you still desirous of the whole truth of God's Word?
Are you on task?
Are you fighting the good fight of faith?

Daily Reading March 10 2010 from 2 Timothy 3:1-9 NIV

Day 59

2 Timothy 3:1-9 NIV

1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self‑control, brutal, not lovers of the good,4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God– 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. 6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak‑willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires,7 always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth–men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. 9 But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

Last Days -
Today Paul begins with a list of the state of man in the last days. "People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God." This is quite a list and far too much for us to explore in this post but suffice it to say with every generation we see the behaviors here described intensify. The longer man lives upon the earth the more evil we see. These are truly signs of the coming of the end. Many, like myself, believe we are very close to the end but many in past generations refused to believe mankind could become more wicked than it was in their day. Nevertheless, the conditions continue to worsen with each day that passes. None of us know when the end will come but we do know that an end will come and Christ will return. The next section of this passage talks about believers or those who call themselves believers "having a form of godliness but denying its power" these call themselves Christians and talk of God but deny his power and refuse to submit to Him. The scripture goes on to say "always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth" we have more knowledge and better teachers than ever before. The gospel is now propagated with media giving us more access than ever before yet so many are so far from God. Paul says "these men oppose the truth-men of depraved minds" Paul says they are rejected as far as faith is concerned. Apparently in the last days their secrets will become clear. God always reveals our true hearts over time. Just put people in crisis situations and you see their hearts clearly. Listen to someones conversation and you can see their passions. Pay attention to what people do with their spare time or disposable income and it's easy to distinguish priorities. God has the benefit of looking right through us by discerning the motives of our hearts. What does God see when He looks in your heart?

Daily Reading March 9 2010 from 2 Timothy 2:14-26 NIV

Day 58

2 Timothy 2:14-26 NIV

14 Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.16 Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.17 Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,18 who have wandered away from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” 20 In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. 21 If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purpose, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.22 Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.23 Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.24 And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.25 Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

Close Your Mouth!
No, not you. This statement is however a very good summary of what the Apostle is saying to those who have wondered or are in danger of wondering away from the faith. Paul begins this section with warning about quarreling. This statement is to believers not unbelievers. Quarreling about WORDS, we are so often word happy. We take a biblical word and define it and then build doctrines around it. These words are then interpreted differently by others which stirs to an argument leading to division. Paul says to correctly handle God's Word and to avoid idle word because it makes us increasingly ungodly. Paul goes on to say that those who babble and stray from the teaching of the truth that their teaching will spread like gangrene. The Apostle next names two such preachers who have strayed from truth and are teaching falsehoods about the resurrection. Their words are discouraging some and causing others to lose faith altogether. In the 23rd verse Paul goes right back to arguments. Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments" these arguments cause fights and division and keep us from what we are called to be doing; "he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, and not resentful" according to Paul those engaged in these arguments are distracted from doing the right things.

It is often difficult but we as the body of Christ need to come together and focus on what we do agree about. We agree about a Savior, we agree that God's Word is our only source and it is infallible, we agree that there is are only two choices for eternity and everyone has to make this choice. When we can agree together on Jesus Christ and presenting the gospel God is pleased.

Daily Reading March 8 2010 from 2 Timothy 2:1-12 NIV

Day 57

2 Timothy 2:1-12 NIV

1 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.3 Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.4 No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs–he wants to please his commanding officer.5 Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules.6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. 7 Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. 8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel,9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God's word is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. 11 Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; 13 if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

A Good Soldier of Jesus Christ -
This statement correctly identifies who the Apostle Paul was. Paul behaved passionately before his encounter on the Damascus road in killing Christians and after working to convert as many as possible. Paul here writes to Timothy that he too should consider himself a soldier of Christ. He goes on to say "no one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs-he wants to please his commanding officer", Paul's way of reminding Timothy that his life and work should be that of preaching and teaching first and foremost. Paul goes on to use two other examples in addition to a soldier, he mentions an athlete and a farmer. Paul's use of analogy helps every reader relate to the instruction he is giving. Work hard and stay on task, this is my synopsis of the message that he is working to convey. Paul next mentions that while he is in chains the gospel cannot and is not chained. Even while Paul suffers and is kept from preaching the Word of God continues to be taught and continues to change lives. This Word is alive and you cannot stop it, silence it, or kill it. Individuals messengers are occasionally silenced but the word continues to accomplish God's will. It doesn't get old or outdated and it's teachings and stories continue to be relevant even thousands of years after their original writing. Paul concludes this section of our reading with "a trustworthy saying"; if we die with Him we will live with Him; if we endure, we will also reign with Him. If we disown Him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, He will remain faithful. A soldier, athlete or farmer must be diligent in their work or they will end in failure. A Christian, follower of Jesus Christ, must remain true to Him and the call to communicate the gospel to the world. Are you a faithful soldier? Do you work for the kingdom?

Daily Reading March 6 2010 from 1 Timothy 6:11-21 NIV

Day 55

1 Timothy 6:11-21 NIV

11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.13 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you14 to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,15 which God will bring about in his own time–God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen. 17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. 20 Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge,21 which some have professed and in so doing have wandered from the faith.
Grace be with you.

Grace Be With You!
Today we conclude the book of 1 Timothy and prepare to move on to 2 Timothy another letter from Paul to "his son in the faith" Timothy. I decided to begin today with the end of the reading, "grace be with you" what a great statement from a man who truly understood God's grace. Paul had committed enough atrocities against God that he knew the truth of God's grace from experience. The older I get the more I want people to know and understand the grace of God. This great "amazing" grace so completely displays the love of God. No man can accurately describe it but we all can live it. We don't know the heighth, depth, or breadth of this loving grace. At times we think we have seen it all and then God does some other miraculous act on behalf of his undeserving creation and we are once again amazed by this grace. I don't write like this today to discount judgment because judgment will come just as certainly as Jesus came but this amazing grace has made a way for all to escape our deserved judgment simply by calling on a Savior and turning from our wicked ways. When I begin to think this way I just want to praise HIM for His love and grace, in fact even as I write tonight I am overwhelmed with His holy presence and again lost in His love.

Fight the Good Fight!
Now on to our text for today. "Man of God" this is the description Paul uses for Timothy, "man of God". As you know by now Paul doesn't loosely throw out complements he obviously had observed behavior in this young man that provoked him to draw such a conclusion. Paul proceeds "flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith." Pursue, fight, flee, take hold? These are words of action not simply sitting back and enjoying the fact that you have achieved eternal life. Paul reminds us that we are to continue in our pursuits until we no longer have breath to breathe. I was reminded lately that once God pursued me with His love but now I pursue Him by seeking His face and gaining more and more intimate knowledge of Him. We can and should pursue God and righteousness. We can and should flee from unrighteous behaviors. We can and should continue fighting against the lies of the enemy by declaring God's Word and reminding the enemy of his fate. This isn't a relationship we just sit back and relax in after we have turned to God but rather an active faith walk that we should pursue daily. David said "early will I seek thee" and I believe it is vital that we begin every day with the pursuit and praise of a holy God. Paul says that Timothy made his good confession in front of many witnesses and he should keep that confession until Jesus comes again. Are you keeping your confession? Sure you will mess up from time to time but are you quickly going to God when you stumble and keeping that relationship intimate? God desires communion with His people and I am so glad that He does. I love to talk to Him and even more when He talks to me.

Take Action!
Right now, take action. Pursue God and an intimate relationship with Him. You don't have to feel dry and alone God wants to be with you right now. He is constantly reaching out to us and when we listen we hear Him and He takes time to demonstrate His love and care for His most precious creation. Praise God! I challenge you to pursue Him with all your mind, heart and strength and see if He doesn't transform your walk with Him.

Daily Reading March 5 2010 from 1 Timothy 6:1-10 NIV

Day 54

1 Timothy 6:1-10 NIV

1 All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God's name and our teaching may not be slandered. 2 Those who have believing masters are not to show less respect for them because they are brothers. Instead, they are to serve them even better, because those who benefit from their service are believers, and dear to them. These are the things you are to teach and urge on them. 3 If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching,4 he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.9 People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Work Relations -
This title might seem like a stretch when Paul is actually speaking about slaves and owners but it is worth mentioning that the advice given here would be very appropriate for employees and managers. Slaves/workers respect your master/boss! Show the respect your superior deserves and remember you are working for the Lord regardless of your job. When we, as employees, demonstrate a good work ethic we glorify God. On the other side of this issue supervisors should treat employees with respect and compassion again showing the goodness of God with their actions. I have worked with both kinds of "Christian" the one who gave all they had understanding who they were working for and the complaining poor witness that hurt the cause of Christ. Matters like this one today and several Paul has addressed here in the book of 1 Timothy has Paul stepping on some toes.

False Doctrines -
The Apostle Paul did not pull any punches and I wonder if his methods would be received by today's church. Paul's greatest concern was obviously pleasing God and not pleasing men. Paul demonstrates this care for God's direction and word in verse 3 "If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 he is conceited and understands nothing. As you know this isn't the first mention we have seen of false teachings. Obviously there was a great issue with individuals trying to corrupt the gospel that Paul had presented so effectively. It's almost as though Paul was followed by those trying to cause dissension. The Apostle here speaks very harshly of these false teachers who claim to be followers of God, he says they are conceited and have no true understanding. They quarrel, are full of envy, cause strife, use corrupt speech, they are suspicious, and they use their religious practices as a means of financial gain. The Apostle Paul doesn't dispute the right of these and other ministers to make a living from their ministry he is disputing their use of God's name to make themselves rich. They love money and things more than they love God and they pollute the truth with their greed. He concludes this section with "some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith". This message is not just for ministers, preachers and teachers but for all believers. Money isn't the only thing that should be mentioned in this list because many things can come between us and God. Paul is reminded Timothy and other believers to keep our focus on Christ and the truth of the Word of God.

Conclusion -
I pray you have been enjoying each of these teachings and devotional writings. Some times we get caught up in a very short list of biblical items but this book shows the diversity of God's Word and demonstrates that there are answers in the Word for every matter we deal with. God's Word was and is meant to be used as a guide. This Word never gets out of date though it was written so long ago. This living Word still teaches, changes, and transforms just as it did two thousand years ago. As we read God's Word today and do so prayerfully it speaks to every area of our life. I have always been amazed as to how the Holy Spirit can take one passage or one sermon and say so many different things to so many different people. We can usually find something that changes us in any sermon we here if we are attentive to the Spirit and are seeking to be more like Christ.

Daily Reading March 4 2010 from 1 Timothy 5:16-25 NIV

Day 53

1 Timothy 5:16-25 NIV

16 If any woman who is a believer has widows in her family, she should help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need. 17 The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.18 For the Scripture says, “Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain,” and “The worker deserves his wages.”19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. 20 Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may take warning. 21 I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism. 22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure. 23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses. 24 The sins of some men are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not cannot be hidden.

Wages-
Next the Apostle Paul turns to elders, teachers, and preachers. He first begins with honor and wages and how a servant of the church is due both honor and pay for the work they do. The Apostles were full time ministers and were committed to prayer and teaching, the other duties of the church were handled by the elders and deacons. There is no question the church has changed greatly since that time and I like most ministers don't mind working and contributing to the financial goals of the church. However, I believe it should be the desire of any minister's heart to be able to minister full time and give ourselves over to preaching the Word and caring for the people we minister to. I know this is the burden of my heart. This brings up the issue of being able to trust God for our provision which is always a key of success in ministry. Ministers rely on God for pay but it takes individuals giving to God to make this possible. This is not something I personally like to bring up before my people as I believe God will move upon the hearts of the faithful and my family will be taken care of either by giving me work to do or through the church and it's people.

Deeds-
Now Paul goes to deeds whether good or bad. He begins with a warning not to accuse someone without multiple witnesses. Don't react to every rumor that is circulating wait until there is adequate evidence before accusing anyone. Paul next says that those who sin should be publicly rebuked. This is not the entirety of this teaching in other scripture Paul gives complete instruction as to how to discipline leaders in the church. He begins by saying to go to the individual in question alone, then take someone with you, and finally after exhausting all other measures go to the church and publicly rebuke the individual. It should never be our intent to expose someone or hurt someone's character. We should discipline publicly only as a last resort. Paul says we should treat everyone without partiality and not show any sort of favoritism. Paul concludes with "the sins of some are obvious reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them" God has a way of handling issues within the church. God will expose the secret things as necessary as we have seen with many ministry leaders over the past couple of decades. We generally don't have to deal with these issues because God is much more conscious of wrongdoing than we are. Finally, good deeds are also quite obvious, people will realize and respect our good deeds and recognize God in our lives when we bear fruit. God will bless and favor the faithful, the anointing will be evident in these lives and God will use them mightily for His glory.

I don't know about anyone else but I want to be used of God. I want my life to be acceptable, I want my offerings of praise to be received as a sacrifice of praise, I want my life to reflect His glory.

Blessings,

Pastor Larry

Daily Reading March 3 2010 from 1 Timothy 5:1-15 NIV

Day 52

1 Timothy 5:1-15 NIV

1 Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity. 3 Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need.4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God.5 The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help.6 But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.7 Give the people these instructions, too, so that no one may be open to blame. 8 If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 9 No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband, 10 and is well known for her good deeds, such as bringing up children, showing hospitality, washing the feet of the saints, helping those in trouble and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds. 11 As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry.12 Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge.13 Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to.14 So I counsel younger widows to marry, to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander. 15 Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan.

Today, Paul gets detailed about relationships within the church focusing a great deal on widows. In the first part of these verses he is clearly calling for respect between brothers and sisters within the church. He tells us to treat older men as fathers, younger me as our brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters. There are so many things that can be learned from developing relationships and seeking counsel from our elders. Many of these older saints have walked where we are now and therefore are able to empathize with our situation. Treating one another with great respect is a part of the love we have been commanded to demonstrate toward one another. The remainder of today's reading focuses on relationships with widows and caring for their needs. Paul gives strict stipulations on when and how to assist widows. This entire passage deals with family like relationships within our church walls. We have an obligation to treat one another with love and respect. Paul is exhorting us to love one another and be as a family unit. A church united in care for one another with older people acting as fathers, mothers, grandmothers, and grandfathers to the younger men, women and children. Where younger members know to respect and honor the older saints, to treat them with admiration because of the endurance they show us as they continue in their faith, and for all to uphold our peers in prayer weeping when others weep and rejoicing with those who rejoice.

Pastor Larry

Daily Reading March 2 2010 from 1 Timothy 4:1-16 NIV

Day 51

1 Timothy 4:1-16 NIV

1 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.3 They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. 6 If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.
8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance
10 (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe. 11 Command and teach these things.12 Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Committed to Truth
Today although not specifically titled this way Paul deals with the duties and requirements on those who preach and teach God's Word. We should not look at this passage as pertaining on to pastor's or teachers but all believers as it speaks of the truth and the study of the truth. While it is true that those who teach and preach will be held to a high standard all believers need to know the truth of God's Word so none of us are deceived. Paul begins this passage talking about such deception "in the latter times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons" Paul goes on to warn about such teachers and their false teachings. These false teachers will, according to Paul, forbid marriage and revert back to teaching about the intake of certain foods. These individuals will apparently do this teaching in a cunning way and deceive some who are in the faith. Obviously from reading this we have to realize that these teachings will be linked to 2 Timothy 3:5 "having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them." they will teach just close enough to the truth and pervert the word to where some will be convinced of their lies. Paul says not to be afraid to eat anything once you have given thanks for it and prayed over it the meal is consecrated by the word of God. He goes on to say those who preach the truth and combat the lies will be considered a good minister of Christ Jesus.

Wives Tales
Paul goes on to discuss myths and wives tales and tells us to be godly and not superstitious. To put our hope in the living God not in any other place or thing. We are blessed by God and not just lucky. God's goodness isn't just mere coincidence He blesses those who serve Him and are called according to His name. So we are to put our complete hope in Christ our Savior and the Savior of the entire world.

Youth
Next Paul addresses Timothy's age. Most likely since Timothy was being used in leadership at a young age and shortly after coming to serve under the Apostle Paul some had used his age against him. Paul reminds Timothy that he was called of God, he rmeinds him of his calling and gift that came through a prophetic word when the elders laid hands upon him. Paul gives a word of advice that we should all heed whether teachers or not live out an example before men that leaves no question as to whom your God is. Paul says it this way "set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity. This word is good for us today. Are you devoting your life to being an example? Are you staying away from evil and even the appearance of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22 KJV)? That's right even the appearance of evil!

Character
People need an example of what it is to be godly. There have been so many false teachers and believers exposes that the world has become cynical of Christianity. We need to be a people of character that live what we believe both privately and publicly. This was Paul's command to his young apprentice and to us today.

Daily Reading March 1 2010 from 1 Timothy 3 NIV

Day 50

1 Timothy 3:1-16 NIV
1 Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task.2 Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self‑controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect.5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?)6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. 7 He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap. 8 Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain.9 They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. 11 In the same way, their wives are to be women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything. 12 A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well. 13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus. 14 Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that,15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. 16 Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great:
He appeared in a body,
was vindicated by the Spirit,
was seen by angels,
was preached among the nations,
was believed on in the world,
was taken up in glory.

Here the Apostle Paul is teaching about the structure of a church and its government. Not a lot needs to be said about these verses accept to note that Paul holds any one in leadership within a local church to an extremely high standard. Whether an Overseer or a Deacon there are certain stipulations that are extremely important for a leader in a local church.

Daily Reading February 28 2010 from 1 Timothy 2:1-15 NIV

Day 49

1 Timothy 2:1-15

1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone–2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior,4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men–the testimony given in its proper time. 7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle–I am telling the truth, I am not lying–and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles. 8 I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing. 9 I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10 but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. 11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission.12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women will be saved through childbearing–if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

Daily Reading February 27 2010 from 1 Timothy 1:12-20 NIV

Day 48

Sorry for the delay on days 48 & 49 as many of you know I was in Allen, OK. preaching a revival and had no internet access.

1 Timothy 1:12-20 NIV
12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service.13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners–of whom I am the worst.16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. 18 Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight,19 holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith. 20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

Second Chances!
Our God is a God of second chances. Paul begins today's reading with this statement "Even though I was once a blasphemer and persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy" not only was Paul shown mercy he was called to ministry and even the writing of God's Word. Paul says was shown mercy because he acted out of ignorance and unbelief but God's grace was poured out on him in abundance. Paul goes on to say that "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners" Paul says in the following verse "I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His unlimited patience as an example" an example for unbelievers. With this kind of example of the love and grace of God every one alive has a hope of a second chance. Remember your second chance! Regardless of your past whether you were one of the worst as Paul described himself or raised in church all your life you are still living by the grace of God. Jesus gave every man a second chance to serve God.

Daily Reading February 26 2010 from 1 Timothy 1:1-11 NIV

Day 47

1 Timothy 1:1-11 NIV

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, 2 To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God's work–which is by faith.5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.6 Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. 7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm. 8 We know that the law is good if one uses it properly.9 We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,10 for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers–and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11 that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

Today we begin the letter (Epistle) to Timothy. It doesn't take long to see and realize the love that Paul had for Timothy. Paul begins this letter with "to Timothy my true son in the faith". Paul begins his writing to his "son in the faith" with an exhortation to continue striving for teaching the truth of God's Word in love. From the comments here in verse 3 we can see that Timothy was left with the Authority of the Apostle to assure that the Ephesians (church at Ephesus) were receiving proper teaching. From Paul's account it becomes apparent that false teachers were trying to slip in and point people back to the law rather than the grace and freedom purchased by Christ on the Cross. Paul declares that what they are doing and teaching is now contrary to sound doctrinal teaching because God's work is by faith and not works or lists of rules. Paul states that the law "is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels" he continues with quite a list but he is saying that the law is for those who have not received forgiveness and turned to God in true repentance. This must have been most difficult for Paul of all people haven been trained by the best of the best, have been a Pharisee. Paul had to have spent a great deal of time and prayer before he became able to understand the true purpose of the law was to show man our hopelessness and our need for a heavenly savior. After Paul's experience on the Damascus road he went into an extended period of training, time alone with God where he was taught the truth of the Word and the message he is now presenting here to Timothy. Paul having been one of the chief persecutors or Christians and chief among law givers certainly knew what it was to be transformed by the love of God. He wanted this same transformation for all believers and he desired to stop those who were preaching contrary or conflicting gospels that were creating much confusion. Timothy became one of his primary students and was quickly trained and put in a leadership role in Ephesus. Now the teacher is writing to his student to encourage him to continue in doing what is right regardless of the opposition he is facing. This message rings just as true for you and I today. If we aren't careful we can grown cold in our walk with God and begin to walk in a more formal way before him. God desires relationship with all of us and when we are walking in communion with Him we can be sure that His Spirit will lead us. No one can create a list of rights and wrongs that would fully encompass what we should and shouldn't do. It is the Holy Spirit that writes the Word on our hearts and when we take a misstep He corrects us. Imagine with me today why a loving God would have dared send His only Son to a people who had rejected Him and His representatives in every way. The only answer to this question is absolute love, a love like we cannot understand. The bible says "God is love" and daily I see this love poured out in my life, don't you? I am so thankful that He came, lived, and died for me. Thankful that He rose from the grave in victory and that I am risen with Him, "seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus". Thank Him today for this love!

Pastor Larry

Day 46

2 Thessalonians 3:1-18 NIV

1 Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you.2 And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith.3 But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.4 We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and Christ's perseverance. 6 In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.7 For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you,8 nor did we eat anyone's food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you.9 We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to follow.
10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “If a man will not work, he shall not eat.” 11 We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies.12 Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. 13 And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right. 14 If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of him. Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed. 15 Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. 16 Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. 17 I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand, which is the distinguishing mark in all my letters. This is how I write. 18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Keep Doing What is Right!
Today's message is very clear, do not be idle. Do not quit working toward the goal. Paul begins by expressing the importance of the message of the gospel being preached. He then begins a warning against idleness, against tiring or ceasing from this labor of love. He warns that some have become idle and quit progressing and pressing on toward the mark and warns that they should stay away from these idle men. The Apostle then points to the example that he and his team had provided when they were present with this church, how they stayed busy laboring in order to be an example for this church. He mentions that they didn't require financial support but rather worked to support themselves so as to not be a burden and furthermore encourage these believers into service. He says "we hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies." Many times when we settle into idleness we begin to allow the flesh to control. We begin to be critical of those who are working and busy ourselves in other peoples work. When we remain active in doing the Lord's work and will we do not have time to worry about someone elses methods or the results they are having. He then gives direction for how to deal with an idle believer; take not of him, do not associate with him, but do not acts as though he is your enemy because he is still a brother. This is certainly an area we, the church, need to be aware of. It is true in most any church that only about 10% of the people do 90% of the work. Many have burned out or become convinced that they have done there share. The Apostle is trying to make it very clear that there is no retirement for the believer. You are never too old and never too tired to continue to press in to the Lord and share the gospel message with others. Take inventory of yourself. Are you working or idle? Are you in the minority, those doing most of the work in your local church or are you simply a spectator doing no more than is required of you. If you find that you are in the majority, the idle, it is time to get active, wake up God has a work for you to do. We are told that the harvest is plenteous but the workers are few. Many times we have the workers but find them to be unmotivated or unwilling to use their talents for various other reasons. God will use what you have to give and multiply your effort. If you are in the 10%, those busy for the Lord do not grow weary or bitter. Do not get the attitude that without me they can't do it. Don't get a controlling spirit but rather give God the glory. It is He that is at work in you making you a successful motivated worker for the Kingdom's sake. It is not our might, power, but God's spirit! Ask God today what can I do and then go to it, get to WORK! There is plenty to do.

Daily Reading February 24 2010 from 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17 NIV

Day 45

2 Thessalonians 2:13-17 NIV

13 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.14 He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter. 16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

Eternal Encouragement!
I like that phrase "eternal encouragement", Paul was an encourager and it becomes more and more evident as we read passages like these to the Thessalonian church. Not only did the Apostle encourage he constantly mentioned those who brought him encouragement. Individuals such as Onesimus, Epaphras, Barnabas, and then churches also that encouraged him such as this very church at Thessalonica. When Paul was in prison there were times where he indicates that many had forsaken and rejected him so he was always very careful to mention those who had stayed true, they were his brothers and thus his encouragers. Encouragers are motivated by love for others. Those who can look through much of our negative qualities and see what we are inside and what we are destined to be in Christ. They are those who see diamonds rather than lumps of coal. They seem to always be able to find some kind of good in any situation and in just about any person. Why shouldn't we be encouraged? We are all examples of what God can do with a submitted life. If you are like me you seemed hopeless and unworthy. In fact I was unworthy and completely hopeless until I found some encouragers who looked through my past and saw what God could do. I still have many undesirable traits but God has delivered me from much. Along the way He has continued to send encouragment along through committed believers who were willing to share His love with the unlovable. It is for this reason that I have no other option but to find others that I can pour love and hope into and watch what God does in these submitted lives. As Paul says here the ultimate encourager is Christ Himself who alone was able to bring ETERNAL ENCOURAGEMENT to fallen man. Praise God! Find someone you can pour into, someone who even seems hopeless, and share the loving encouragement of Christ.

Daily Reading February 23 2010 from 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 NIV

Day 44

2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 NIV
1 Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, 2 not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come. 3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. 5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? 6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

The Coming King!
In today's passage Paul is addressing an apparent fear that Jesus has already come or might come and catch some unaware. There was apparently enough fear of being left behind that the Apostle felt the need to write a second letter and address this misconception. Paul begins today's reading with "now, bretheren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering to Him" so Paul is addressing a concern of many of the people he continues in verse 2 with do not be shaken or troubled in mind "as though the day of Christ has come. Paul then begins to give some signs of His coming so they can have peace and not live in worry about being left. Growing up I can remember this being an issue for me. I can remember night where I had trouble going to sleep for fear that I might not be ready. While this isn't completely unhealthy my view of God was flawed just as these people. I was saved as these believers are and we are not told to live in fear but faith. The day of His coming shouldn't produce dread and fear but rather excitement and yearning. Sure we want time for many of our loved ones to be saved but there is no question that upon His coming we will experience great joy. Paul then begins to discuss the coming of the Anti-Christ, he refers to Him as the "son of perdition." This son of perdition will do everything in his power to mimic God and deceive people into thinking he is God. The Holy Spirit is mentioned here as the restrainer. The prayers of the church keep evil from being unleashed upon this earth, but when the church is taken out of the way a terrible day will ensue. Best before we get too carried away Paul says in verse 8 that "the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming" yes this evil one will come but Christ will come again in power and with little effort take back all that belongs to God. We as believers do not need to fear this enemy because we know our future! We know that there is a very real and eternal heaven and even if we happen to live til the end when Jesus returns we will indeed know the joy of His return. Rejoice today because the King is coming. We need to live like He is coming tomorrow and save as many as we can while there is time.

Daily Reading February 22 2010 from 2 Thess. 1:1-12 NIV

Day 43

2 Thessalonians 1:1-12 NIV

1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timothy, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ;2 Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.3 We are bound to give thanks to God always to you, brethren, even as it is meet, for that your faith growth exceedingly, and the love of each one of you all toward one another aboundeth;4 so that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions which ye endure;5 which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God; to the end that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:6 if so be that it is a righteous thing with God to recompense affliction to them that afflict you,7 and to you that are afflicted rest with us, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with the angels of his power in flaming fire,8 rendering vengeance to them that know not God, and to them that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus:9 who shall suffer punishment, even eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might,10 when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be marvelled at in all them that believed (because our testimony unto you was believed) in that day.11 To which end we also pray always for you, that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfil every desire of goodness and every work of faith, with power;12 that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Distinction between believers and unbelievers!
Today we begin Paul's second letter to the people of Thessalonica. There is much debate about the time this book was written but many believe it was written almost immediately after Paul's first Letter (Epistle) to these people. The time of its writing is certainly not all that important to us just its meaning and what we can glean from it. We know that all scriptures is of great value because it is part of the life changing, powerful Word of God. Paul begins this letter like most that he writes with greetings and compliments. He notes the growth of their faith as well as the measure of their love for one another. It seems he again attributes these qualities to their persecutions. These people are under intense scrutiny and persecution and it has caused the church to band together and become the united church that God intended. Once again as is so often evident in God's Word, what the enemy means for evil God turns and uses it for good. Paul goes on to pray for them that they can continue to endure the affliction and then mentions the coming judgment for those who are their enemies and therefore enemies of God and the gospel. He states that they will "suffer punishment, even eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of His might, when He shall come to be glorified in His saints." Paul again draws on a reference to the Lord's return and continues to have them keep their focus on the promise of eternity both for those who do good and those who commit these evil acts of persecution. Paul concludes these verses with a prayer that God will count these individuals worthy of their calling, and that He will complete the work of their faith with power. Paul mentions that Christ is being glorified in these people and in this church because they have chosen to remain in Christ rather than become bitter and seek revenge against those who persecute them. The bible constantly points to a distinction between believer and unbeliever. We are constantly reminded that God's Ways are higher and we have been called to higher ways in Him. We are reminded when we read passages like this today that we are to pray for our enemies, our accusers, and even those who might seek to kill us for our faith. When all is said and done it is God who will avenge the innocent blood of those who have called on Him. It is God that will pronounce judgment on both the evil and the good. All we are called to do is to stay in Christ and pray for those who are deceived into trying to live without Him. Our challenge is to not behave like the world to be separate. To forgive quickly so we are acceptable to Him who we are living for. Today again we are being challenged to examine ourselves and see whether or not we have risen above the old behaviors, whether or not we are able to stay in Christ even in the face of hardships and persecutions. Can your fruit be readily seen even at a distance? Are you glorifying God in your every day living?

Daily Reading February 21 2010 from 1 Thessalonians 5:12-28 NIV

Day 42

1 Thessalonians 5:12-28

12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you.13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. 16 Be joyful always;17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire;20 do not treat prophecies with contempt.21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. 22 Avoid every kind of evil. 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. 25 Brothers, pray for us.26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Closing Remarks!
It is obvious from today's reading that Paul is bringing this letter to a close. He uses several brief statements to give final instructions to this beloved church. Among Paul's admonishments they are told respect those over them in the Lord, live in peace, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone, be joyful always, pray continually, always give thanks, do not quench the spirit, do not treat the prophecies with contempt, test everything, hold on to good, and hold on to evil. This is quite a summary of commands. The first section of commands verses 12-15 are commands in relating to the treatment of one another while verses 16-22 are in reference to spiritual things. Paul again reminds them of the need to remain in faith and always be prepared for the coming of the Lord. Then he concludes with make sure all brothers read this letter and may God's grace be with you. These letters are so vital for us to study because they are directed to the church, the New Testament church. While reading these passages we not only see the heart of the Apostle Paul but we also see the struggles of these churches. These struggles should be extremely helpful to us today as they were to these very early churches.

Daily Reading February 20 2010 from 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 NIV

Day 41

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you,2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self‑controlled.7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self‑controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.10 He died for us so that, whether
we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Sons of the Light!
Paul begins this section by writing about the timing of the coming of the Lord. We know from other scripture that no man knows the day or the hour though many have tried to predict the exact date. Most recently we have been hearing the date 2012 used as a possible date and time. Years ago it was 1988 when a man named Edgar Whisenant wrote of the 88 reasons why Jesus would return for the church in 1988. Later after his prediction didn't come true he gave 89 reasons why He would return in 1989, needless to say Whisenant found many less eager ears in 1989 after bring proven wrong in 1988. Since just shortly after Jesus ascended to heaven there has been talk of his return with many predictions as to when. While we cannot know the exact date and time we can understand the times. As Paul writes here we shouldn't be surprised by the coming of the Lord, in other words we should have an understanding of the nearness of His coming. We are not in darkness but rather we are children of light, of the day. Paul says in verse 6 "let us be alert and self-controlled" we belong to the day so we should be self-controlled. Paul goes on in verse 8 "let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and hope of salvation as a helmet. Are you living in hope, faith, and love? Are you trusting God? Are you walking in love? Are you renewing your mind on a daily basis? We have this great hope because Jesus came, overcame, died and arose. We can take courage because He lived the perfect life and became the sacrifice for our sins. Our challenge today is to stay in the light. Many circumstances can bring us down and cause us to doubt, lose hope, or waiver in our faith. But when we choose to walk in the love of Christ He will cause us to prevail even in the most difficult of times. Take courage God is in control.

Daily Reading February 19 2010 from 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 NIV

Day 40

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 NIV

13 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.15 According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage each other with these words.

Death Were is Your Sting?
"Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep" here Paul makes death sound so temporary and for the believer it truly is. The Bible tells us that Jesus overcame death, hell, and the grave. Paul is again proclaiming the hope of the Cross to these persecuted believers in order to encourage them to persevere. Paul here speaks of the resurrection of the dead when Jesus returns for those who have called on Him. Verse 16 tells us that the Lord will command with a voice and a trumpet call and then at that very moment the dead in Christ will arise and after that those who are still living and serving Christ will be taken away to meet the Lord in the air. This is what we commonly call the rapture of the church. This is the ultimate promise to the believer. This promise should be communicated to all who believer in order to encourage. Not that we should cease from all activity until He comes on the contrary we need to win as many as we can as we anxiously look toward that last day. Paul concludes this chapter with "encourage each other with these words." We spend a great deal of time worrying about our enemy but we can read verses like these and realize even if we are killed for Christ we have the ultimate hope of eternity with our Lord. Aren't you glad you can claim that promise. If you cannot simply call on His name in repentance, He will hear your cry and you too can have this great hope of heaven and eternity with the Savior.

1 Corinthians 15:51-57 NIV
51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed–52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” 55 “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Daily Reading February 18 2010 from 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12 NIV

Day 39

1 Thessalonians 4:1-12 NIV

1 Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3 It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;4 that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,5 not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;6 and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you.7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8 Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.
9 Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. 10 And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more. 11 Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

A life pleasing to God!!!
"Finally, brothers, we instruct you how to live in order to please God!" Wow, what a daunting task. How can I live in a way pleasing to God? Paul proceeds with what is a pleasing or sanctified life; avoid sexual immorality, learn to control your body, do not walk after the lust of the flesh, don't wrong or take advantage of your brother, lead a quiet life, and to mind your own business. This is quite a list but it is only a list, this isn't a how to but rather a what to do. Paul began with this is how to live in order to please God not here is what you need to do in order to please God. See we cannot instruct one another in living a holy life because none of us of our own accord accomplish this. It is only when we live in Christ that we are holy or that we can walk in holiness. Paul is referring here to sanctification but he isn't talking about a one time experience with God that causes us to be holy, he is speaking of a life of commitment to God and obedience to Him. Paul goes on to say you are not trying to live out my ideal Christian life but rather the life the Holy Spirit would instruct you to lead. They are warned not to neglect the instruction of the Lord through the Holy Spirit. I once worked with a woman who had been involved in a multitude of sins. Many of us would have met her and deemed her hopeless. She was a meth addict, lived with a man who was not her husband, and on and on. The list is far to long to recount. There were those around us who wanted to correct her and change her but God continued to say allow Me time to work in her life. She came to church and we laid hands on her and prayed and she was instantly delivered from her drug addiction, what a miracle it was. There were still those around who were pressing me to challenge the other issues in her life but I was resigned to leave her in the hands of God who was surely working in her life. After about two weeks she called and acknowledged that God (through the Holy Spirit) was dealing with her about living with a man who was not her husband. That next weekend we helped her move out of that home. It was like this over and over we simply stepped back and watched as God transformed this hungry believer. The thing I want to point out is this, God didn't love her anymore after her deliverance than before. God simply honored her hunger for change and made it possible for her. We could have taken a legalistic approach and given her a list of how we felt she should live but this would not have provided for her deliverance, God has a better way. I have learned that hungry people obey God the bible says "they that hunger and thirst after righteousness shall be filled", most of the time we are little more than spectators to what God is doing. Oh yes, we pray and seek God we teach and preach, we serve as we are led but ultimately it is God who changes individuals into His pleasure. I simply love watching God at work in a hungry, desperate life, it is a beautiful thing. So in review our job is to preach the hope of Jesus Christ and pray for those who don't know Him but it is God's job to change people and He will do so when we commit individuals into His care. He will do it His way in His time and we cannot manipulate this process. Enjoy the view and do your job! Are you doing your job or are you trying to get into God's business? Paul instructed these people in how to live a please life but he also knew that it was God who changed his heart and God would have to change these submitted believers. This way if someone isn't changed we are not responsible all we can do is communicate the hope of Christ and there level of hunger and faith will determine how much they are changed by the transforming power of a loving Father in heaven. Are you pleasing God? Are you still hungry for Him? When your hunger subsides you will cease to change in other words as long as we hunger and thirst we will continually be filled but when that stops we cease to grow. Examine your life, are you growing?
