Day 21

Philippians 2:19-30 NIV

19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you.20 I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare.21 For everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.22 But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel.23 I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me. 24 And I am confident in the Lord that I myself will come soon. 25 But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs.26 For he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill.27 Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow.28 Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety.29 Welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor men like him,30 because he almost died for the work of Christ, risking his life to make up for the help you could not give me. 

Paul expresses his love for this church and these people in our reading today. Paul's obvious concern for the church is seen in the first few verses. Paul is committing his young apprentice if you will Timothy to this church. Paul has poured himself into Timothy, he has often referred to him as his son in the faith.  In the 21st verse he mentions that Timothy is trustworthy and not like others who are only looking out for their own interests than those of Jesus Christ. Paul is a shepherd and with this writing and conclusion to the 2nd chapter we see his heart for this church. He continues that "Timothy has proved himself". This must have been a very significant church to Paul, there must have been a bond of unity and love in this church. Paul appears to long for fellowship with the Philippian church. Paul mentions the joy and gladness this church brings him. We are also called to this kind of bond and fellowship with other believers. Paul, like David had a zeal for the house of the Lord and fellowship with other believers. 


Psalms 122:1 I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the Lord.” 

We need that kind of zeal for God's house and fellowship with like-minded believers. Churches like the Philippians church seem to be rare but they are very special to the Lord. Churches with this kind of love and unity are favored churches. God blesses a house of worship where the congregants come together in unity, one mind and one accord. I am thankful to be in such a church. In fact today I am longing for my church as we are dismissed due to weather. I look forward to gathering with my family, church and physical, in God's house.

Daily Reading January 30 2010 from Philippians 2:12-18 NIV

Philippians 2:12-18 NIV
12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed–not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence–continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. 14 Do everything without complaining or arguing,15 so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe16 as you hold out the word of life–in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

Paul begins this passage with an interesting statement "you have always obeyed-not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence". Obviously Paul has heard good reports about the church at Philippi. We have all heard character defined as what you do in the dark or alone. The Philippians were people who exemplified Godly character. Paul finishes verse 12 with "continue to work out your own salvation with fear and trembling". Continue is the optimal word!  Continue with God, continue in His grace. Paul begins by testifying of what he has seen and heard but then exhorts them to continue down the path of service to God. Paul makes this continuation personal when he says "work out your own salvation", he is letting them know that neither he or anyone else can live the life for them. We too should know that no one can make us continue in service, it is a personal choice and success comes when we die daily! Verse 13 says "for it is God who works in you". Paul is aware that he cannot be there guide and conscience, he is aware of his soon coming fate and he is encouraging them to have a relationship with God and to yield to the Holy Spirit. This passage challenges us to spend time with God and to listen intently to the Spirit for direction so we continue to walk according to our calling. This should challenge us to make our relationship with God first and foremost. Even a devout Apostle like Paul was not able to help these people continue, only God and the leading of His Spirit can do so.

Be led of the Spirit, obey the Word and the inner witness and continue with HIM!!!

Philippians 2:1-11 NIV
1 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Paul begins by talking about unity and love for others. He mentions the need to be unified, of one mind and in one accord. We know from the book of Acts (chapter 2) that unity brings the blessing and favor of God. When the disciples got together in one mind and in one accord they turned their world upside down. 

Psalms 133:1 How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! 

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition! 
These next few verse speak about consideration for others. We as Christians are called and taught to consider the needs of others. To look at the harvest fields and focus on the lost. To reach out to all who have need and show the love of Christ. Paul sites the example of Christ and how He humbled Himself  and endured the Cross so we could be reconciled to God. Since Christ humbled Himself the Father has exalted Him now His name is above all names. The disciples had conversations about who was the greatest until Jesus answered their questions. 


Luke 22:24-27 NIV
24Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.


 Jesus was again teaching us something that is contrary to our nature, to love others first, to become a servant so we can lead, to humble ourselves and then God will lift us up. This isn't an easy lesson but it is emphasized throughout God's Word. Our challenge daily should be to seek out those who have needs and bless them. Perhaps we should start each day with a prayer that God would help us to find those in need so we can reach out with the love of Christ.

Philippians 1:19-30 NIV

19 for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me. 27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved–and that by God.29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him,
30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have. 

Today we are reading Paul's famous discourse "to live is Christ and to die is gain". Paul describes his desire to be with Christ but then declares he cannot go at present time because he is needed. Paul is stating that he hasn't finished the work he has been called to do. He is also declaring that his desire is no matter what to do the will of the Father.  

The final few verses of this passage are Words of encouragement. Paul encourages the believers to stay in Christ and operate in faith and not fear. He says that when believers stand firm in the faith it reminds our enemies of our victory and their imminent defeat. We are victorious in Christ and we have a promise of eternal life because of His grace. Praise God for the promise! 


Today I am thankful for my mentors who have spoken words of encouragement into my life. It seems just in time when I need it most someone speaks a word of encouragement and propels me on to the next victory. I praise God for obedient friends who pray over me and keep me moving forward toward the goal. Paul was this kind of friend and we can still read his words today and take courage. 

Pray for your Brothers and Sisters and look for opportunity to pour into someone's life!

Daily Reading January 27 2010 from Philippians 1:12-18 NIV

Day 17

Today's Word is challenging. Read it prayerfully and examine yourself. The question today is Lord, am I in Your perfect will?

Philippians 1:12-18 NIV

12 Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly. 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.16 The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,

Reading this passage instantly took me to Acts chapter 21 when a prophet by the name of Agabus came to Caesarea. Agabus prophesied of Paul's imprisonment and many then began to beg Paul not to travel to Jerusalem. Paul responded much the way he does here in Philippians, "Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus". In our reading today Paul is already in chains and is rejoicing because the Gospel of Christ is being preached even more now that he has been imprisoned. Paul, who said to always be content, is living what he wrote. He says the chains have not stopped him from preaching but actually encouraged him to preach all the more vigorously. Our persecutions today don't even come near to what the Apostles face. Our fear is not being accepted not being jailed, beaten, or even killed. Paul is demonstrating the selflessness of a Christian. Paul said it is our reasonable service to offer our whole self to God and he is doing just that in these scriptures. What respect he had with Christians and non-Christians alike. He mentions that even the palace guard is aware of why he is in chains and gloried because that made them aware of Christ. Paul was fulfilling the plan God had for his live, are we? How might we respond if God asked for our lives? Well, He has asked for our lives. He has ask us to die to self and live for Him and when we do, what joy we have! The passage mentioned in the book of Acts is below. 


Acts 21:10-13 NIV 
10 After we had been there a number of days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 Coming over to us, he took Paul's belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, “The Holy Spirit says, ‘In this way the Jews of Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.’ ”
12 When we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up to Jerusalem.13 Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”

Are you in the will and plan of God? You can live out your destiny. Let the Spirit lead and see what God can do with your life.

Daily Reading January 26 2010 from Philippians 1:1-11

Day 16

Today we move on to the book of Philippians another letter from the Apostle Paul.

Philippians 1:1-11 NIV

Greeting

1 Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thankfulness and Prayer

3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, 5 for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; 7 just as it is right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace. 8 For God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ.9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. 

Paul begins with an introduction and a greeting. As always Paul speaks a word of encouragement to begin  his letter. He begins by being thankful and letting them know that he is praying for them. Then Paul speaks a word of confidence in God "He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ", in other words God isn't finished with you yet but He will complete His work. This should encourage us because this promise wasn't just for those who received this letter but for all who believe on Jesus Christ. This is another scripture that can be prayed! Insert your name and proclaim the good work that God has begun in me He will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. 


In verse 7 Paul declares that these individuals both Jew and Gentile alike are equal partakers with him in the grace of God. Paul has completely left the old formalities of the way he was taught. Paul had been trained by the best of the best. His pedigree was true and he could have had a long and prosperous career as a Rabbi but when Jesus spoke to him he left all the religious ways behind and followed after God. Paul had to be taught again according to the truth and he had to learn to accept and give the grace of God. This was a definite departure from his Pharisee training. The Apostle Paul was so impassioned about telling others of Jesus that he, the most unlikely to do so, became the Apostle to the Gentile people. A people before he would have had no communication with. God's love and grace transform us in miraculous ways when we submit to Him! 


Then in verse 9 Paul prays for their discernment. Discernment is a Gift of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12), this gift helps us to discern spiritual things. Discernment between excellent (things of God) and counterfeits (things of the devil). Discernment is needed today just as it was in those days. Jesus warned of false teachers that would come and deviate from the truth. The devil lies and deceives but he closely mimics the things of God. Therefore, we need discernment and understanding in order to follow God. How do we get discernment? Ask! The answer with God is always simple ask and obey. Paul ends this section in verse 11 stating a prayer that the letter's readers would be pleasing to God as they live lives that glorify and praise Him.

Daily Reading for January 25 2010 from Ephesians 6:10-4

Day 15

Please read this entire passage. Yes, it is long but there is so much here. If we could just understand these words we would be living a victorious life.

Ephesians 6:10-24

The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
19 Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel,
20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

Final Greetings

21 Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing.
22 I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage you.
23 Peace to the brothers, and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.24 Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.

There is more here than I could possibly deal with in a single post or even a single day. This is a powerful passage with such rich content and it is meant to be read, studied, digested, and practiced! The full armor of God not parts and pieces but the full armor. I have decided to break this down verse by verse with just a few brief comments to keep the length of this post shorter.



V. 10 be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power

We are once again reminded by the Apostle Paul that it is God's strength that sustains us. We are weak because this battle is not fought in the physical realm. The remaining verses teach us how to protect ourselves and how to fight! 

11 Put on the full armor so you can STAND against the devil’s schemes

STAND! The word stand is emphasized throughout this passage as it speaks of standing on what we believing and resisting the devil until he flees.

James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

As we stand armed and ready the devil will be required to flee. You see he is just looking for a chink in our armor a way in! The bible tells us "neither give place to the devil" but when we are standing fully armed there is no way for him to attack except with deceipt (schemes). The Word schemes describes our adversary. He is sneaky, he is always looking for a way to lie, cheat, steal, or deceive his way into wearying us in our fight.  The good news is that we don't have to give in and be defeated the bible promises triumphant victory.


Romans 8:37-39
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,

39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 

2 Corinthians 2:14 
 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.



12 our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers,
Against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against
The spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms

Now our enemy is identified. We are in a spiritual battle. Many times we point to people (humans) and look at them as though they are the enemy. The truth is that they are being used by the enemy to attack us. People who yield to the devil's influence become tools for his dark works just like when we yield to Christ and become instruments of righteousness.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NIV
3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 

God knew we would be engaged in spiritual warfare so he gave us the weaponry necessary to win these battles. The passage above says we have the power to demolish strongholds, arguments, and pretensions. We even have the power to control our minds, after all we do have the "mind of Christ". So we have no reason to fear these rulers and wicked authorities as long as we are in Christ and fully armed. We read earlier in Ephesians that Jesus defeated all these enemies and made a show of them openly. Jesus did the full word and evil has been conquered we have been given the victory. 


13 with the full armor you will be able to stand your ground, and
After you have done everything (exhausted everything you can do),
Stand in faith

14 stand firm! Belt of truth (Word of God), breastplate of
Righteousness – (Jesus is our righteousness)

15 feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace

Again we are turned to the Word of God with the statement gospel of peace.  God's Word is the good news, gospel, and when we turn to His Word and confess it over our lives we WIN! His Word brings peace.


16 shield of faith which extinguish ALL the flaming arrows of the
Evil one

The attacks will come and will continue to come but none of them has to harm us as long as we stay in faith. We do that by reading and understanding the Word of God. The Word builds up our faith and makes it possible for us to stand.

Romans 10:17 NIV
17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message,
and the message is heard through the word of Christ. 


It helps me to read His Word aloud, it gets down in my spirit and when I encounter a battle that living Word comes to mind and I speak the victorious Word over my situation. The Word of God never fails, it is full proof. 




17 The helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit which is
The Word of God (a weapon not Just an element of defense) fight
the good fight of faith

Helmet of salvation! The protection of our head. The mind is where we are often attacked. Many times throughout God's Word we see passages like they cannot see or they cannot hear. Or their minds were turned against God. Satan attacks the mind if possible. There seem to be more and more mental illnesses today than ever before. Depression is rampant even among Christians but I don't believe we have to be subject to many of these attacks. I believe the answer to these conditions many times can be found in the Word of God. We have the mind of Christ! When we put on the full armor our minds, sight, and hearing, are protected. Furthermore, the mouth is house in the head. The mouth is a powerful weapon both for good and evil. The bible says that what we say is who we are. Many times our own confessions do more damage to our lives than satan ever could. Change your speech, read the book of James and see what is said about the tongue. We are meant to speak faith and not fear, positive and not negative. Confession of the Word is powerful . "And God said let there be light" God did all His creative works with confession. We too have power in our confession so when our confession lines up with the Word and the Will of God we have power. Don't be deceived into confessing negative things!

This passage doesn’t end here but proceeds in verse 18

18 pray in the Spirit on ALL occasions with all kinds of prayers
And requests, be alert and always keep on praying for all saints

Prayer is such a key! So many are powerless today because they don't pray. Spending time in prayer is vital to having victory. The scripture says to pray with all kinds of prayers. It also says to pray in the Spirit, we have been given a power prayer language. And when we cannot pray anymore or cannot pray with knowledge the bible says the spirit prays for us with groanings. A prayer life is a must for living the victorious life and standing against the attacks of the enemy. Paul said to pray without ceasing!

I realize this was a very long post but I do pray you have read these words. This is a passage of Scripture that should be read and read again. It needs to be digest and then acted upon. We are told to take up the sword of the spirit. So many times we are in a defensive position just trying to survive until Jesus comes but we were meant to claim and conquer for the name of Jesus. When we begin to pray out the Word and Will of God the devil flees and we can reclaim the lost for Jesus Christ. Are you STANDing?

Daily Reading for January 24 2010 from Ephesians 6:1-9

Day 14

Ephesians 6:1-9 NIV

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.2 “Honor your father and mother”–which is the first commandment with a promise–3 “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart.7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men,
8 because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.

9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.

Another section on respect and relationships. We are heading into February and the Valentines season. The Bible is the greatest guide we have for developing and enhancing our relationships. These scriptures today deal with some weighty matters beginning with the Parent/Child relationship. While there is no doubt that kids are much less respectful today it is also true that parents do less to teach and even earn respect in our day and time. After children are exhorted to honor their parents and given a tremendous promise of long life we see an exhortation to Father to train and instruct their children in the ways of the Lord. What would our world look like if the Dads would step up and become the spiritual leaders within their homes? Would this alone solve most of our relationship and crime issues? I for one believe it would. Today is a day without accountability or responsibility. A day when everyone seems to be a victim and no one wants to ever step up and take responsibility for their actions. If you Father a child you should provide for and care for that child, end of story! We live in a world where a relationship with the heavenly Father has been pushed to the back burner. If more young men and women were being taught the truth of God's Word and shown the love of Christ our world wouldn't look as it does. I would be able to watch the nightly news which I now avoid for all its negative and shocking content.

The final section of this passage speaks of servitude. The idea of serving was foreign to Jesus' disciples as it is to many today. They were shocked when He stopped and knelt down to wash their feet. He demonstrated what it meant to serve others and showed us the way. He told the disciples the greatest servant among them would be the most honorable in heaven. What a lesson for us to learn. We have become so busy and filled with our own lives and issues that we seem to have lost the concept of serving others. Servanthood is a command! Are you serving? Do you serve in your local church or just fill a pew? Do you look for opportunities to help others or just look the other way because you are too busy? I realize this is a hard word because it is for me. Jesus taught this with the story of the good Samaritan true love, God's love, leads us to serve! Do you have the love of Christ? Of course you do but are we walking in it?

Romans 5:5...because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. NIV

Daily Reading for January 23 2010 from Ephesians 5:25-32

Day 13

Ephesians 5:25-33
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church–30 for we are members of his body.31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”32 This is a profound mystery–but I am talking about Christ and the church.33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. 

This passage speaking of husbands and wives is also a representation of the love that Jesus has for His church. This message has been used wrongly in the past but as we examine it we realize that the passage doesn't speak of a husband dominating his wife but loving, providing for, and serving her. The text demands mutual respect one for another. Just as Christ served and even died for the church (His bride) husbands are meant to do for their wives. It makes you wonder how many marriages and other types of relationships could be saved if we just practiced love and respect as Jesus demonstrated.

Daily Reading for January 22 2010 from Ephesians 5:15-21

Day 12

Ephesians 5:15-21 NIV

15 Be very careful, then, how you live–not as unwise but as wise,16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord,
20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 

A simple passage today before getting into a lengthy one tomorrow. Paul exhorts the people to watch how they live, to watch their witness. To make the most of every opportunity. 


Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom. 

When are being taught to do everything as if we are doing it unto God.  So when you go to work you are working for God not the employer. Many times we get our eyes on our careers but we should always keep in mind that we are working for the glory of God. So Paul says make the most of every opportunity. Look for opportunities to minister and do God's Word and when those doors open be obedient. 

Speak to one another with Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs...
Exhort others! Share your testimonies of God's goodness and encourage others with God's Word. Rejoicing in the Lord stirs us to joy and the joy of the Lord is contagious. There are many around us who need to get there eyes off our trials and on to our joy, our hope in Christ. 

Paul concludes this section with always give thanks. Paul teaches in other passages that we can be content in any situation. The Apostles were known for praising God even when they were being persecuted. They had truly learned that their hope was in Christ and not in the foundations of this world. This is a difficult task but let me encourage you today to thank God in spite of things that are discouraging you. That's right praise Him in advance because you know that you will always come out victorious in Christ. He has already bought our victory, He has fought our battles and we WIN. Practice praise and see if God doesn't lift your Spirit. Stir up your joy with praise and thanksgiving. We can all find something in which to be thankful for.

Daily Reading for January 21 2010 from Ephesians 5:1-14

Ephesians 5:1-4 NIV
1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people.4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person–such a man is an idolater–has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient.7 Therefore do not be partners with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)10 and find out what pleases the Lord.11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible,
14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:
“Wake up, O sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

The first 2 verses of Chapter 5 say it all:

Ephesians 5:1-2

Be imitators of God and live a life of love just, just as Christ loves us!
There are many things that follow these words but the point is to be Godly, to be like Christ. The writer goes on to say what not to do but strategically places proper conduct in the passage. In verse 5 after a list of things we should not do we are told to speak words of Thanksgiving. Next we are told in verse 8 to live as children of light. The previous verses tell us not to be deceived or to act out of disobedience but rather we should obey God. Verse 9 in parenthesis tells us how to check to see if we are walking in the light  "the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth". So if we are walking in the light of the Love of Christ we should be producing fruit. The passage continues with find out what pleases God! How do we know what pleases God? We know that what the Spirit says we are to do and since the Spirit of God lives within us we can listen to His still small voice. When He convicts we respond in repentance, when He whispers we can quiet ourselves and obey His commands. We can also know what pleases God by reading the Word for it's infallible truth. A truth that sets us free. The passage continues by saying that as we walk in the light darkness is exposed.

Today's scripture reference ends with an exhortation to awaken from our sleep. There are many such passages in the scripture, most of which are speaking to the church to awaken and be strong. I want to take this opportunity to encourage you to pray for an awakening. We live in a nation that needs to be awakened to its' origins, we were founded on Christian principles and it is time that we return to God. As you are praying next pray for your church. Every church needs an awakening from time to time. We need to be awakened to the power of God. We need to once again be out demonstrating God's Word by living it. Living a life of love, believing and demonstrating every Word of the Bible. Healing the sick, raising the dead, preaching the gospel until many come to know Him as their Savior. Finally, pray for a personal awakening. The awakening that is so need in our world, nation, and churches will start with a personal revival. The revival starts with us the individual and when one individual begins to trust God and seek His face others always follow before long a united, passionate church will rise up and begin to believe and declare the totality of the Word of Truth. Pray with me for an awakening.

Daily Reading January 20 2010 Ephesians 4:25-32

Day 9

Enjoy the Word today as we complete Ephesians chapter 4. I love the book of Ephesians it is so full of hope and promise. It reminds us that we have been saved by a loving God and we are no longer bound by what we once were.


Ephesians 4:25-32 NIV
25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.26 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,27 and do not give the devil a foothold.
28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. 

Do not give the devil a foothold! I have this verse committed to memory of course I learned it from the KJV "niether give place to the devil". This is such an important truth. The bible tells us that if we "resist the devil and he will flee ",  if we read that entire verse we understand that we resist the devil or rebuke him by submitting to God. 


James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

The Apostle Paul goes through several areas where we might fail and give place to the devil. Lies, anger, gossip or unwholesome talk, bitterness and so forth.  We all have areas of life where we struggle. Areas of temptation where we have weakness but the Word says there is no temptation that cannot be overcome. The bible says we are overcomers. When we fall we need to get up and put it under the blood. Some say I can't overcome this one thing and I have tried. Paul then says to not "grieve the Holy Spirit of God", how important that statement is. When the Holy Spirit is pleased with us we are surrounded by the glory of God. But when we grieve the Spirit He doesn't have the freedom to work in our lives. When we listen to His voice and obey we please the Father and we walk in the blessing. Our own efforts are generally fruitless but when we surrender and admit our weakness then God comes along and brings about our deliverance, He is our strength. I am thankful that Jesus conquered death, hell, and the grave and firmly put the devil in His place. I don't always feel like it but God says I am a victor! That's right WE are victorious and not victims. Jesus paid it all, the entire price for my freedom. Let's walk in victory today by denying the flesh and walking in the Spirit. Submit to God and get under the blood of Jesus. Paul wraps his message up with some words of encouragement reminding us that Jesus forgave us of all our sins. Be encouraged God is our champion and in Him we are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.

2 Corinthians 2:14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.

Daily Reading for January 19 2010 Ephesians 4:17-24

Day 9

We are not reading as much at a time as we digest Ephesians 4. These passages have so much content that they need to be read and digested. Today's teaching is about repentance. Repentance is more than a confession it is turning around. I hope you enjoy this passage. Remember as you pray about this Word today ask God to reveal to you by His Holy Spirit any areas in your life where some change might be necessary. The Word of God speaks to us and changes our hearts.

Ephesians 4:17-24 NIV
17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.
19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.
20 You, however, did not come to know Christ that way.21 Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds;
24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Paul gets right down to it in this passage. He reminds us not to live and act as we once did, to strive for holiness. He says "put off your old self" and to "put on the new self" in another passage we are told to "put on Jesus Christ". Paul goes on to say we are created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. What Paul is talking about here is repentance. When we accept Christ we are supposed to turn from our old ways. We find that we are convicted as we walk with Christ and the more we draw near to Him the more he seems to reveal. It has been my experience that those who are hungry find the truth of God's Word and accept it. Giving up what we used to be isn't nearly as difficult when we do so out of a love for God. God leads us to repentance and then supplies the grace and compassion necessary to help us as we deal with the areas of our lives that are not pleasing to Him. I am so glad I didn't have to clean myself up first. Many try but they always fail. A relationship with Christ is the only way to be made acceptable in the site of the Father. We can trust the Holy Spirit to help us! As we hunger and thirst after righteousness the bible promises we will be filled.

Daily Reading for January 18 2010 Ephesians 4:10-16

Ephesians 4:10-16
10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.
16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. 

The first part of this passage speaks of the diversity of offices within the church. It is vital that we operate in these areas as the church benefits from each person operating in the fullness of their gift.  As long as we see ourselves as the body and Christ as the head we can keep the proper perspective. All gifts and callings are precious and important to the body. All parts of the body are of equal importance. We need one another and when we foster an environment of empowerment and growth we can see everyone around begin to utilize their gifts for the Kingdom of God. It is clearly stated that the Church is Christ's and we are to come together to be the body under the authority of the head. The final section of this scripture mentions "speaking the truth in love". It is important that we rightly divide and then proper USE the Word of God. The Word wasn't meant to be used as a weapon against one another or even the lost it was meant to defeat the enemy of our souls. However, when we rightly divide the Word of truth and teach the Word of God with love and compassion it is amazing how God can change a life. I am always thankful that I am not the judge and am not responsible to changing others. I have learned to trust the Holy Spirit and the Word of God to transform individuals who seem to have no hope. Praise God, I have found my hope in Jesus Christ. Have you?

Sorry, I failed to send this out yesterday. This is Sunday's reading. You should have a calendar in case I fail in the future.

Ephesians 4:1-9

Unity in the Body of Christ

1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.4 There is one body and one Spirit–just as you were called to one hope when you were called–5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.

8 This is why it says:
“When he ascended on high,
he led captives in his train
and gave gifts to men.”
9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions?


As I preached yesterday morning. It is vital for a church to be in unity. The bible talks about the anointing of a united church in Psalm 133. A church that is unified is a church that loves one another and fellowships with one another. People who attend united, loving churches have a zeal for God's house and they linger even after the service ends. Fellowship is good because God is with them in their midst (Matthew 18:20 For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.”). I am thankful that Porter church is experiencing this kind of an outpouring right now. Yesterday we didn't leave the church until after 1:30 PM. What a blessing it is to be able to worship with your family and our church is like a family. No, we aren't related by blood just by Christ's blood. It is important that we solve our differences quickly and love one another.

Daily Reading Ephesians 3 January 15 2010

Day 3 

All God's Word is wonderful to read but this is another rich illustration of just how much God loves us. Enjoy your reading today and remember to pray the promises you read over yourself and others.

Ephesians 3:1-13 NIV

1 For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles–
2 Surely you have heard about the administration of God's grace that was given to me for you,3 that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly.4 In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ,5 which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets. 6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus. 7 I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God's grace given me through the working of his power.8 Although I am less than the least of all God's people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms,11 according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.
13 I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory. 

  • Throughout today's reading Paul speaks of the mystery of the gospel and how it was not revealed until Christ came. He speaks about the plan being made known. We live in the dispensation of the grace of God and we know of His love and grace toward not only Israel but also toward all who would believe. The Apostle Paul's position in this was to let the gentiles know that Jesus died for all! Praise God He died for me and you regardless of race, family blood line, status and with out regard to any other prerequisite.

  • V. 10 shows the importance of the church and that God created the church to be a united body made up of like-minded individuals. Not elite and slaves, but that all would be equal because He saved us all with the same measure of grace. This passage speaks again of the authority of the church. It demonstrates again that Jesus has put all principalities and powers under His feet and under the dominion of the church. We have been given the keys to the Kingdom. We have been given the right to bind and loose. We can pray the prayer of agreement in unity and God will respond to our prayers. 

Matthew 18: 18-20
18 “I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will bebound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19 “Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.20 For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” 

  • V. 11 Reminds us that we can "come boldly to the throne of grace" (Hebrews 4:16). We have been granted access to the Holy of Holies. Our Priesthood was established when Jesus went to the Cross and the veil separating man from God was torn into and was made irreparable.   Now we can know for sure that nothing can separate us from the Love of God!

Romans 8:38-39
38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Day 4

 

This is a great scripture reminded us of God's grace and mercy towards man. I am so thankful that He found me when I was lost. Now because of the Cross I am free!

 

Ephesians 2:11-22 NIV

One in Christ

11 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (that done in the body by the hands of men)–12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.
14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility,15 by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace,16 and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. 19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household,20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.
22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. 

V. 13 
What a wonderful reminder of the grace of God in verse 13 - Mankind was once a million miles from God with no hope of ever knowing Him but then  God sent His Son, Jesus. It's by His Blood that we are now able to have access to the Father (V. 18). Praise God for the Blood!


V. 15

He fulfilled the law and did away with the lists of rules that we could never fulfill anyway. Now we can be saved by grace and grace alone. Thank God I don't have to be good enough to earn the love of God.

Daily Reading January 13 2010 Ephesians 2

Day 3 - Alive in Christ

I pray you are enjoying reading God's Word. The passage today has some tremendous promise in it.

Ephesians 2

Made Alive in Christ

1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions–it is by grace you have been saved.6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–9 not by works, so that no one can boast.10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. 

Verse 6 shares a great promise that we can pray, this is undoubtedly a verse of authority for those who confess it - I am raised up with Christ and seated with Him in heavenly realms. 


Verse 10 another great confession that shows God has purpose for our lives - I am God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for me to do.

Ephesians 1:11-23 NIV 
11In him we were also chosen,[e] having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.
Thanksgiving and Prayer
 15For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. 17I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[f] of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, 20which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
