1 Timothy 1:1-11 NIV

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, 2 To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God's work–which is by faith.5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.6 Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. 7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm. 8 We know that the law is good if one uses it properly.9 We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,10 for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers–and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11 that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

Today we begin the letter (Epistle) to Timothy. It doesn't take long to see and realize the love that Paul had for Timothy. Paul begins this letter with "to Timothy my true son in the faith". Paul begins his writing to his "son in the faith" with an exhortation to continue striving for teaching the truth of God's Word in love. From the comments here in verse 3 we can see that Timothy was left with the Authority of the Apostle to assure that the Ephesians (church at Ephesus) were receiving proper teaching. From Paul's account it becomes apparent that false teachers were trying to slip in and point people back to the law rather than the grace and freedom purchased by Christ on the Cross. Paul declares that what they are doing and teaching is now contrary to sound doctrinal teaching because God's work is by faith and not works or lists of rules. Paul states that the law "is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels" he continues with quite a list but he is saying that the law is for those who have not received forgiveness and turned to God in true repentance. This must have been most difficult for Paul of all people haven been trained by the best of the best, have been a Pharisee. Paul had to have spent a great deal of time and prayer before he became able to understand the true purpose of the law was to show man our hopelessness and our need for a heavenly savior. After Paul's experience on the Damascus road he went into an extended period of training, time alone with God where he was taught the truth of the Word and the message he is now presenting here to Timothy. Paul having been one of the chief persecutors or Christians and chief among law givers certainly knew what it was to be transformed by the love of God. He wanted this same transformation for all believers and he desired to stop those who were preaching contrary or conflicting gospels that were creating much confusion. Timothy became one of his primary students and was quickly trained and put in a leadership role in Ephesus. Now the teacher is writing to his student to encourage him to continue in doing what is right regardless of the opposition he is facing. This message rings just as true for you and I today. If we aren't careful we can grown cold in our walk with God and begin to walk in a more formal way before him. God desires relationship with all of us and when we are walking in communion with Him we can be sure that His Spirit will lead us. No one can create a list of rights and wrongs that would fully encompass what we should and shouldn't do. It is the Holy Spirit that writes the Word on our hearts and when we take a misstep He corrects us. Imagine with me today why a loving God would have dared send His only Son to a people who had rejected Him and His representatives in every way. The only answer to this question is absolute love, a love like we cannot understand. The bible says "God is love" and daily I see this love poured out in my life, don't you? I am so thankful that He came, lived, and died for me. Thankful that He rose from the grave in victory and that I am risen with Him, "seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus". Thank Him today for this love!

2 Thessalonians 3:1-18 NIV

1 Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you.2 And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith.3 But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.4 We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and Christ's perseverance. 6 In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.7 For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you,8 nor did we eat anyone's food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you.9 We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to follow.
10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “If a man will not work, he shall not eat.” 11 We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies.12 Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. 13 And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right. 14 If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of him. Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed. 15 Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. 16 Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. 17 I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand, which is the distinguishing mark in all my letters. This is how I write. 18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Keep Doing What is Right!
Today's message is very clear, do not be idle. Do not quit working toward the goal. Paul begins by expressing the importance of the message of the gospel being preached. He then begins a warning against idleness, against tiring or ceasing from this labor of love. He warns that some have become idle and quit progressing and pressing on toward the mark and warns that they should stay away from these idle men. The Apostle then points to the example that he and his team had provided when they were present with this church, how they stayed busy laboring in order to be an example for this church. He mentions that they didn't require financial support but rather worked to support themselves so as to not be a burden and furthermore encourage these believers into service. He says "we hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies." Many times when we settle into idleness we begin to allow the flesh to control. We begin to be critical of those who are working and busy ourselves in other peoples work. When we remain active in doing the Lord's work and will we do not have time to worry about someone elses methods or the results they are having. He then gives direction for how to deal with an idle believer; take not of him, do not associate with him, but do not acts as though he is your enemy because he is still a brother.This is certainly an area we, the church, need to be aware of. It is true in most any church that only about 10% of the people do 90% of the work. Many have burned out or become convinced that they have done there share. The Apostle is trying to make it very clear that there is no retirement for the believer. You are never too old and never too tired to continue to press in to the Lord and share the gospel message with others. Take inventory of yourself. Are you working or idle? Are you in the minority, those doing most of the work in your local church or are you simply a spectator doing no more than is required of you. If you find that you are in the majority, the idle, it is time to get active, wake up God has a work for you to do. We are told that the harvest is plenteous but the workers are few. Many times we have the workers but find them to be unmotivated or unwilling to use their talents for various other reasons. God will use what you have to give and multiply your effort. If you are in the 10%, those busy for the Lord do not grow weary or bitter. Do not get the attitude that without me they can't do it. Don't get a controlling spirit but rather give God the glory. It is He that is at work in you making you a successful motivated worker for the Kingdom's sake. It is not our might, power, but God's spirit! Ask God today what can I do and then go to it, get to WORK! There is plenty to do.

2 Thessalonians 2:13-17 NIV

13 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.14 He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter. 16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

Eternal Encouragement!
I like that phrase "eternal encouragement", Paul was an encourager and it becomes more and more evident as we read passages like these to the Thessalonian church. Not only did the Apostle encourage he constantly mentioned those who brought him encouragement. Individuals such as Onesimus, Epaphras, Barnabas, and then churches also that encouraged him such as this very church at Thessalonica. When Paul was in prison there were times where he indicates that many had forsaken and rejected him so he was always very careful to mention those who had stayed true, they were his brothers and thus his encouragers. Encouragers are motivated by love for others. Those who can look through much of our negative qualities and see what we are inside and what we are destined to be in Christ. They are those who see diamonds rather than lumps of coal. They seem to always be able to find some kind of good in any situation and in just about any person. Why shouldn't we be encouraged? We are all examples of what God can do with a submitted life. If you are like me you seemed hopeless and unworthy. In fact I was unworthy and completely hopeless until I found some encouragers who looked through my past and saw what God could do. I still have many undesirable traits but God has delivered me from much. Along the way He has continued to send encouragment along through committed believers who were willing to share His love with the unlovable. It is for this reason that I have no other option but to find others that I can pour love and hope into and watch what God does in these submitted lives. As Paul says here the ultimate encourager is Christ Himself who alone was able to bring ETERNAL ENCOURAGEMENT to fallen man. Praise God! Find someone you can pour into, someone who even seems hopeless, and share the loving encouragement of Christ.

2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 NIV
1 Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, 2 not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come. 3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. 5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? 6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

The Coming King!
In today's passage Paul is addressing an apparent fear that Jesus has already come or might come and catch some unaware. There was apparently enough fear of being left behind that the Apostle felt the need to write a second letter and address this misconception. Paul begins today's reading with "now, bretheren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering to Him" so Paul is addressing a concern of many of the people he continues in verse 2 with do not be shaken or troubled in mind "as though the day of Christ has come. Paul then begins to give some signs of His coming so they can have peace and not live in worry about being left. Growing up I can remember this being an issue for me. I can remember night where I had trouble going to sleep for fear that I might not be ready. While this isn't completely unhealthy my view of God was flawed just as these people. I was saved as these believers are and we are not told to live in fear but faith. The day of His coming shouldn't produce dread and fear but rather excitement and yearning. Sure we want time for many of our loved ones to be saved but there is no question that upon His coming we will experience great joy. Paul then begins to discuss the coming of the Anti-Christ, he refers to Him as the "son of perdition." This son of perdition will do everything in his power to mimic God and deceive people into thinking he is God. The Holy Spirit is mentioned here as the restrainer. The prayers of the church keep evil from being unleashed upon this earth, but when the church is taken out of the way a terrible day will ensue. Best before we get too carried away Paul says in verse 8 that "the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming" yes this evil one will come but Christ will come again in power and with little effort take back all that belongs to God. We as believers do not need to fear this enemy because we know our future! We know that there is a very real and eternal heaven and even if we happen to live til the end when Jesus returns we will indeed know the joy of His return. Rejoice today because the King is coming. We need to live like He is coming tomorrow and save as many as we can while there is time.

2 Thessalonians 1:1-12 NIV

1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timothy, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ;2 Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.3 We are bound to give thanks to God always to you, brethren, even as it is meet, for that your faith growth exceedingly, and the love of each one of you all toward one another aboundeth;4 so that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions which ye endure;5 which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God; to the end that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:6 if so be that it is a righteous thing with God to recompense affliction to them that afflict you,7 and to you that are afflicted rest with us, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with the angels of his power in flaming fire,8 rendering vengeance to them that know not God, and to them that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus:9 who shall suffer punishment, even eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might,10 when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be marvelled at in all them that believed (because our testimony unto you was believed) in that day.11 To which end we also pray always for you, that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfil every desire of goodness and every work of faith, with power;12 that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Distinction between believers and unbelievers!
Today we begin Paul's second letter to the people of Thessalonica. There is much debate about the time this book was written but many believe it was written almost immediately after Paul's first Letter (Epistle) to these people. The time of its writing is certainly not all that important to us just its meaning and what we can glean from it. We know that all scriptures is of great value because it is part of the life changing, powerful Word of God. Paul begins this letter like most that he writes with greetings and compliments. He notes the growth of their faith as well as the measure of their love for one another. It seems he again attributes these qualities to their persecutions. These people are under intense scrutiny and persecution and it has caused the church to band together and become the united church that God intended. Once again as is so often evident in God's Word, what the enemy means for evil God turns and uses it for good. Paul goes on to pray for them that they can continue to endure the affliction and then mentions the coming judgment for those who are their enemies and therefore enemies of God and the gospel. He states that they will "suffer punishment, even eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of His might, when He shall come to be glorified in His saints." Paul again draws on a reference to the Lord's return and continues to have them keep their focus on the promise of eternity both for those who do good and those who commit these evil acts of persecution. Paul concludes these verses with a prayer that God will count these individuals worthy of their calling, and that He will complete the work of their faith with power. Paul mentions that Christ is being glorified in these people and in this church because they have chosen to remain in Christ rather than become bitter and seek revenge against those who persecute them. The bible constantly points to a distinction between believer and unbeliever. We are constantly reminded that God's Ways are higher and we have been called to higher ways in Him. We are reminded when we read passages like this today that we are to pray for our enemies, our accusers, and even those who might seek to kill us for our faith. When all is said and done it is God who will avenge the innocent blood of those who have called on Him. It is God that will pronounce judgment on both the evil and the good. All we are called to do is to stay in Christ and pray for those who are deceived into trying to live without Him. Our challenge is to not behave like the world to be separate. To forgive quickly so we are acceptable to Him who we are living for. Today again we are being challenged to examine ourselves and see whether or not we have risen above the old behaviors, whether or not we are able to stay in Christ even in the face of hardships and persecutions. Can your fruit be readily seen even at a distance? Are you glorifying God in your every day living?

1 Thessalonians 5:12-28

12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you.13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. 16 Be joyful always;17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire;20 do not treat prophecies with contempt.21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. 22 Avoid every kind of evil. 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. 25 Brothers, pray for us.26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Closing Remarks!
It is obvious from today's reading that Paul is bringing this letter to a close. He uses several brief statements to give final instructions to this beloved church. Among Paul's admonishments they are told respect those over them in the Lord, live in peace, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone, be joyful always, pray continually, always give thanks, do not quench the spirit, do not treat the prophecies with contempt, test everything, hold on to good, and hold on to evil. This is quite a summary of commands. The first section of commands verses 12-15 are commands in relating to the treatment of one another while verses 16-22 are in reference to spiritual things. Paul again reminds them of the need to remain in faith and always be prepared for the coming of the Lord. Then he concludes with make sure all brothers read this letter and may God's grace be with you. These letters are so vital for us to study because they are directed to the church, the New Testament church. While reading these passages we not only see the heart of the Apostle Paul but we also see the struggles of these churches. These struggles should be extremely helpful to us today as they were to these very early churches.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you,2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self‑controlled.7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self‑controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.10 He died for us so that, whether
we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Sons of the Light!
Paul begins this section by writing about the timing of the coming of the Lord. We know from other scripture that no man knows the day or the hour though many have tried to predict the exact date. Most recently we have been hearing the date 2012 used as a possible date and time. Years ago it was 1988 when a man named Edgar Whisenant wrote of the 88 reasons why Jesus would return for the church in 1988. Later after his prediction didn't come true he gave 89 reasons why He would return in 1989, needless to say Whisenant found many less eager ears in 1989 after bring proven wrong in 1988. Since just shortly after Jesus ascended to heaven there has been talk of his return with many predictions as to when. While we cannot know the exact date and time we can understand the times. As Paul writes here we shouldn't be surprised by the coming of the Lord, in other words we should have an understanding of the nearness of His coming. We are not in darkness but rather we are children of light, of the day. Paul says in verse 6 "let us be alert and self-controlled" we belong to the day so we should be self-controlled. Paul goes on in verse 8 "let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and hope of salvation as a helmet. Are you living in hope, faith, and love? Are you trusting God? Are you walking in love? Are you renewing your mind on a daily basis? We have this great hope because Jesus came, overcame, died and arose. We can take courage because He lived the perfect life and became the sacrifice for our sins. Our challenge today is to stay in the light. Many circumstances can bring us down and cause us to doubt, lose hope, or waiver in our faith. But when we choose to walk in the love of Christ He will cause us to prevail even in the most difficult of times. Take courage God is in control.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 NIV

13 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.15 According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage each other with these words.

Death Were is Your Sting?
"Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep" here Paul makes death sound so temporary and for the believer it truly is. The Bible tells us that Jesus overcame death, hell, and the grave. Paul is again proclaiming the hope of the Cross to these persecuted believers in order to encourage them to persevere. Paul here speaks of the resurrection of the dead when Jesus returns for those who have called on Him. Verse 16 tells us that the Lord will command with a voice and a trumpet call and then at that very moment the dead in Christ will arise and after that those who are still living and serving Christ will be taken away to meet the Lord in the air. This is what we commonly call the rapture of the church. This is the ultimate promise to the believer. This promise should be communicated to all who believer in order to encourage. Not that we should cease from all activity until He comes on the contrary we need to win as many as we can as we anxiously look toward that last day. Paul concludes this chapter with "encourage each other with these words." We spend a great deal of time worrying about our enemy but we can read verses like these and realize even if we are killed for Christ we have the ultimate hope of eternity with our Lord. Aren't you glad you can claim that promise. If you cannot simply call on His name in repentance, He will hear your cry and you too can have this great hope of heaven and eternity with the Savior.

1 Corinthians 15:51-57 NIV
51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed–52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” 55 “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 4:1-12 NIV

1 Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3 It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;4 that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,5 not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;6 and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you.7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8 Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.
9 Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. 10 And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more. 11 Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

A life pleasing to God!!!
"Finally, brothers, we instruct you how to live in order to please God!" Wow, what a daunting task. How can I live in a way pleasing to God? Paul proceeds with what is a pleasing or sanctified life; avoid sexual immorality, learn to control your body, do not walk after the lust of the flesh, don't wrong or take advantage of your brother, lead a quiet life, and to mind your own business. This is quite a list but it is only a list, this isn't a how to but rather a what to do. Paul began with this is how to live in order to please God not here is what you need to do in order to please God. See we cannot instruct one another in living a holy life because none of us of our own accord accomplish this. It is only when we live in Christ that we are holy or that we can walk in holiness. Paul is referring here to sanctification but he isn't talking about a one time experience with God that causes us to be holy, he is speaking of a life of commitment to God and obedience to Him. Paul goes on to say you are not trying to live out my ideal Christian life but rather the life the Holy Spirit would instruct you to lead. They are warned not to neglect the instruction of the Lord through the Holy Spirit. I once worked with a woman who had been involved in a multitude of sins. Many of us would have met her and deemed her hopeless. She was a meth addict, lived with a man who was not her husband, and on and on. The list is far to long to recount. There were those around us who wanted to correct her and change her but God continued to say allow Me time to work in her life. She came to church and we laid hands on her and prayed and she was instantly delivered from her drug addiction, what a miracle it was. There were still those around who were pressing me to challenge the other issues in her life but I was resigned to leave her in the hands of God who was surely working in her life. After about two weeks she called and acknowledged that God (through the Holy Spirit) was dealing with her about living with a man who was not her husband. That next weekend we helped her move out of that home. It was like this over and over we simply stepped back and watched as God transformed this hungry believer. The thing I want to point out is this, God didn't love her anymore after her deliverance than before. God simply honored her hunger for change and made it possible for her. We could have taken a legalistic approach and given her a list of how we felt she should live but this would not have provided for her deliverance, God has a better way. I have learned that hungry people obey God the bible says "they that hunger and thirst after righteousness shall be filled", most of the time we are little more than spectators to what God is doing. Oh yes, we pray and seek God we teach and preach, we serve as we are led but ultimately it is God who changes individuals into His pleasure. I simply love watching God at work in a hungry, desperate life, it is a beautiful thing. So in review our job is to preach the hope of Jesus Christ and pray for those who don't know Him but it is God's job to change people and He will do so when we commit individuals into His care. He will do it His way in His time and we cannot manipulate this process. Enjoy the view and do your job! Are you doing your job or are you trying to get into God's business? Paul instructed these people in how to live a please life but he also knew that it was God who changed his heart and God would have to change these submitted believers. This way if someone isn't changed we are not responsible all we can do is communicate the hope of Christ and there level of hunger and faith will determine how much they are changed by the transforming power of a loving Father in heaven. Are you pleasing God? Are you still hungry for Him? When your hunger subsides you will cease to change in other words as long as we hunger and thirst we will continually be filled but when that stops we cease to grow. Examine your life, are you growing?

1 Thessalonians 3 NIV

1 So when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens.2 We sent Timothy, who is our brother and God's fellow worker in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith,3 so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. You know quite well that we were destined for them.4 In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know. 5 For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter might have tempted you and our efforts might have been useless. 6 But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you.7 Therefore, brothers, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith.8 For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.9 How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you? 10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith. 11 Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you.12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. 13 May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.

Trials and Persecutions!
Chapter 3 is a relatively short section of this letter but the content is weighty. The Apostle Paul is trying to help this young church endure trials, sufferings, and persecutions. Paul mentions that he had concern about this church and when he couldn't wait any longer he sent Timothy to encourage the people and bring back a report. Paul's concern was that these trials and sufferings would cause some to fall and hurt the fledgling church. "I was afraid that in some way the tempter might have tempted you and our efforts might have been useless" here the Paul is voicing the reason for his concern. He realizes that since he had to leave prematurely that he was concerned that temptation and discouragement might set in and break up this young ministry effort. The persecution began while Paul and his missionary team were ministering in Thessalonica. The Jewish leaders became enraged as Paul began to win over new converts to Christianity and away from Judaism. Paul was accused of treason and forced to flee for his life. Jason a native of Thessalonica had been Paul's host and he was brought out before the mob and accused of aiding and abetting a traitor. These persecutions apparently continued even after Paul and the team had fled. In fact you can read where people from Thessalonica followed Paul to other locations again inciting riots and stirring up strife. I'm sure Paul hated to leave not knowing what would happen to his new converts therefore he sent Timothy to check on them. Timothy returned with a report that their faith had continued it seems this is often the case when a church is persecuted. Verse 6 states "but Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love" This news was enough to ease Paul's concerns therefore Timothy's trip not only satisfied Paul but also greatly encouraged this young church. Paul concludes with a word of longing to worship with them again and then a prayer of blessing. Verse 13 "May He (God) strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones. Paul again mentions the coming of the Lord as we often do when we begin to go through times of distress or difficulty. Any time I go to the hospital to visit and elderly saint one sure consolation is the prize that is just ahead of them. The Thessalonians must have taken solace and encouragement from these words because repeatedly refers to the Lord's coming through this first Epistle to these beloved people. Persecution is difficult for you and I to imagine in this free nation where we live but there are those around the world being killed for declaring the name of Christ. Why don't you take a few minutes today and pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters just as the Apostle Paul did for the people of Thessalonica. Thinking of others and their persecution should serve to cause us to pray for our freedom to continue, to pray for others who don't have freedom, and cause us to praise God because we are so blessed.

13 And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.14 For you, brothers, became imitators of God's churches in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own countrymen the same things those churches suffered from the Jews,15 who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to all men 16 in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them at last. 17 But, brothers, when we were torn away from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.18 For we wanted to come to you–certainly I, Paul, did, again and again–but Satan stopped us.19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? 20 Indeed, you are our glory and joy.

A True Shepherd!
Though Paul filled the role of Evangelist, Missionary, and Apostle you cannot read his writings without seeing his shepherd's heart. Paul loved these people and wrote to correct but also to encourage these churches that he had helped to establish. He was always careful who he sent to them and constantly expressed his desire to hear of their growth. In our passage today his heart for this church and these people truly shows. True shepherds are not just numbers oriented, they build relationships and care about individuals as well as the church as a whole. Paul demonstrates this kind of love and passion consistently throughout his writings. Paul begins with thanksgiving because these believers had heard and accepted God's Word. He was expressing thanks for the evidence of salvation that he had seen and was hearing about. He mentions how these believers had been persecuted for the cause of Christ yet they had remained faithful to Him. Paul closes this section of scripture in by relaying his desire to see these believers again and renew these old relationships. Paul says "we were torn away from you for a short time" but then Paul continues again expressing his love for these individuals "(in person, not in thought)" this parenthetical statement truly expresses my heart and the heart of all pastors. Even when we are separated from our flock either by time or distance we never lose site of the needs and relationships we have found. People come and go and sometimes geography separates but relationships that are built in Christ are eternal and they are significant. This is why we can call our church a church family. Do you have a church family! Is it truly a group of like minded believers passionate about one another? We can sacrifice great preaching, great music, and many other bells and whistles that seem to exemplify the modern church but you cannot replace the true united love of a church that has bonded as a family in the love of Christ. These churches are favored of God because there is true love for God and one another. I pray that everyone who reads this post can identify with what I am writing. I pray you have a true church family and a shepherd that truly cares for you. Find someone you can pour your life into, someone not as strong in their relationship, someone who needs a mentor, or someone who just needs an accountability partner. We can all shepherd someone! Do you have the heart of a shepherd?

1 Thessalonians 2:1-12 NIV
1 You know, brothers, that our visit to you was not a failure.2 We had previously suffered and been insulted in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in spite of strong opposition.3 For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you.4 On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts.5 You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed–God is our witness. 6 We were not looking for praise from men, not from you or anyone else. As apostles of Christ we could have been a burden to you,7 but we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children.8 We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us. 9 Surely you remember, brothers, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you. 10 You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed.11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, 12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.


God-Pleasers!!!
Paul expresses the love that he has for these believers in our reading today. Paul lists the many ways they have tried to present the gospel without offense to the Thessalonian church. Paul first mentions that during the time he preached their that he encountered serious opposition. Many places the Apostle traveled he was met with those who would try and prevent the preaching of God's Word. Paul mentions this opposition to remind his readers of the significance of the gospel he was preaching around the world. He goes on to say that in spite of this resistance they will continue to preach because they are seeking to please God and not man. What a valid point for us today. We should also be seeking to please God, sometimes this is difficult but especially when you are ministering God's Word. Some of the teachings of the bible both today and in Paul's day are out of favor with society. This is why God's Word tells us that we are strangers and aliens that we are separate because we have been reborn into Jesus Christ. Paul continues by pointing out that they didn't come as a burden demanding money or support but they came and preached the gospel without strings in order to convince these people of the relevance of their message. This was apparently a great contradiction to what some other ministers of the day were doing. Obviously we can see from the text that some were preaching for financial gain and out of greed. Some were deceiving these believers and trying to preach a gospel that brought them gain rather than God. Paul then reminds them of not only his work, and enduring opposition but also of the love they demonstrated while ministering in Thessalonica. What a powerful lesson for us to learn. Paul said he didn't preach with big words or exciting messages, he didn't have capture an audience with his charisma, or promises, he didn't alter the Word of God in order to entice these people to glorify him rather than God. But he rather preached Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Paul preached for God and not for man. Paul was not known for compromising on the truth of the Word and because of his faithful preaching the truth in love God blessed him with a great and fruitful ministry. Many were saved because Paul was a God Please, are you? I truly want to be a God pleaser and I'm sure you do as well. What a challenge this can be when we all want to be well thought of. Sometimes sharing the truth is difficult, sometimes it hurts us to present these truths, sometimes when reading God's Word we ourselves are hurt by what we read. God Word is a "two-edged sword" it doesn't just cut and change the listener but it should also change the preacher. Are you being changed by God's Word? I know if you are reading it with sincerity of heart that God is changing you just as He is me.

1 Paul, Silas and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and peace to you. 2 We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. 3 We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you,5 because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.6 You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.7 And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.8 The Lord's message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia–your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it,9 for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead–Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

Imitators of Christ!
Today we begin the letter to the church at Thessalonica. You will notice this letter is addressed from not only Paul but Paul, Silas, and Timothy. Obviously all three are familiar and have participated in the ministry to this church. Paul uses three statements to describe the Thessalonians a faith that was productive, a labor of love, and their endurance inspired by the hope of Christ. Faith, hope, and love appear to be present with these believers. Paul also mentions that God emphasized the gospel he preached to these people with power, the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. Paul says that they are obviously chosen because of the way that God proved the Word they preached. In verse 6 the Apostle says that these believers have proven themselves faithful to God even in their severe suffering, they received the message of hope with joy. What a compliment these believers are given "your faith in God has become known everywhere", this was a church that was making a difference in their world. It wasn't necessary for Paul to brag about these people and their faithfulness nor was it necessary for them to brag about themselves their actions spoke clearly about their love for Christ. Paul said they had become imitators of the Lord. Have you become an imitator of Christ? Do your model your Christianity after others you know or have you taken time to get to know the God of the Word and to imitate Jesus and the way He lived when He came as a man? These believers had imitated Paul and in so doing they had become imitators of Christ. Paul had resigned himself to doing nothing that didn't reflect Christ and therefore he had become a minister that only brought God glory and honor. What an epitaph! These are the words we should long to have written about us that when others imitate us they are also imitating Christ because we have become invisible, we have died to self and now only live to reflect and glorify God. Does your life reflect and glorify God? These are the kinds of questions we should be asking ourselves. Have you decreased so that Christ increases in you?

I could not access the internet yesterday our hotel was experience technical difficulties so here is yesterday's scripture and commentary.

Colossians 4:7-18 NIV
7 Tychicus will tell you all the news about me. He is a dear brother, a faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord.8 I am sending him to you for the express purpose that you may know about our circumstances and that he may encourage your hearts. 9 He is coming with Onesimus, our faithful and dear brother, who is one of you. They will tell you everything that is happening here. 10 My fellow prisoner Aristarchus sends you his greetings, as does Mark, the cousin of Barnabas. (You have received instructions about him; if he comes to you, welcome him.)11 Jesus, who is called Justus, also sends greetings. These are the only Jews among my fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and they have proved a comfort to me.12 Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.13 I vouch for him that he is working hard for you and for those at Laodicea and Hierapolis.14 Our dear friend Luke, the doctor, and Demas send greetings. 15 Give my greetings to the brothers at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church in her house. 16 After this letter has been read to you, see that it is also read in the church of the Laodiceans and that you in turn read the letter from Laodicea. 17 Tell Archippus: “See to it that you complete the work you have received in the Lord.” 18 I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be with you.

These concluding verses of the letter to the Colossians include Paul's mention of his fellow servants. Paul speaks of friends such as Tychicus who he is sending to the Colossians, Onesimus who is apparently a Colossian himself, the Apostle Luke the physician, and many others. It appears that Paul is wanting these people to know that they are not alone that others care greatly about them. This was a common practice of the Apostle Paul to send members of his team to these churches to encourage them to continue in their faith. He closes with a request that this letter also be read to the church at Laodicea. Though we know often we read Paul's letters and find they are written by others in this case in verse 18 Paul makes mention that he has written at least this section with his own hand. This appears to be another way that Paul is emphasizing the importance of this correspondence.

Colossians 4:1-6 NIV

1 Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven. 2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

Power in Prayer!
Beginning in the 2nd verse Paul begins teaching on prayer. The subject of prayer seems to consume our reading today and it should also consume our churches hearts and minds. Prayer is an essential element to every believer's life and every churches health. Jesus was angered most when He entered into a temple and found everything but prayer taking place. Paul is simply reminding these believers that without prayer they are powerless and unable to do ministry. Jesus didn't even enter His miraculous ministry until He went out into the wilderness for a season of prayer. Before He faced particular challenges in His life He would find a place alone to quiet Himself and talk with the Father. So often we look to confront the major issues of our lives and ministries without taking the time to call on God or we give a quick mumbled hurried prayer and expect it to be enough to carry us through. No, Jesus did not know this kind of prayer life and neither did Paul. Perhaps that is why when the devils spoke to the seven sons of Sceva (Acts 19) they proclaimed that they knew Paul and they knew Jesus but did not know these men. Were they are prayerful group of believers or a powerless hurried religious family? The answer lies in the result, their lack of power and ability to call on God was on display for all to see. We are no different! We need the power of God and a knowledge of His very nature and prayer is the place where we can know God and He can know us. When we spend quiet time before Him we are known in hell. We should make it our goal to get alone in a quiet place and talk to the God of all creation. Our children need to know His power, lost individuals need to experience His power, and in order to walk in faith we need to remain in intimate relation with Him.

18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged. 22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men,24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. 25 Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism.

Relationships Covered -
In today's reading Paul takes on various relationships and in every case we are told to love, honor and respect. Wives to husbands, husbands to wives, children to parents, parents to children, slaves to masters, etc... The Bible has much to say about relationships in fact it is a book of relationships those with God and among men. In every instance we are urged to serve one another and then God will elevate us. This is definitely contrary to what our world says about relationships and success. The world measures success by money, prestige, power, and fame but God says that the greatest servant will be the greatest leader and therefore the greatest in the Kingdom. God's ways continue to confound the wisest of humanity but His way is the only way. Commit your relationships to God and see what He can do but in order for any other our relationships to work we must be connected to the God of all relationships. God created marriage, family, and friendship surely abiding in Him will enhance these relations in our daily lives. Our motto at the church is to Connect with God...Connect with others. God first then all other relationships from there.

Colossians 3:1-17 NIV
1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. 12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 7 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Raising the Standard!
Jesus raised the standard when He went to the grave and changed everything. Our standard of living immediately rose. The bar was set to a new level because He rose and raised all believers up with Him. Now He is seated at the right hand of the Father making intercession for us all. We are received a better promise according to Hebrews 11. Better than Abraham, better than Isaac, or Jacob, even better than King David or any other great bible character you can name. They had a promise but we have seen the fulfillment of that promise come to pass in Christ when He destroyed the old limitations and raised the standard to new heights. Paul says to "set your minds on things above, not on earthly things" because our standard is not measured in earthly things, our treasure is not of the earth, even our home is not here on this earth. Paul says to raise the standard and follow Christ by raising the standard in our minds, by overcoming the desires of our flesh, in our relationships, in our emotional lives, and in our way of living. Verse 12 "as God's chosen people, holy and dearly beloved, clothe yourselves in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience." Paul goes into a discourse on relationships with others about forgiveness and kindness but the emphasis goes to LOVE! "Over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity" without love we cannot be kind, patient, forgiving, considerate, without love our relationships stall and our ministries fail. Without love we live in fear and without hope but with love we can have peace with God and compassion for others. God is love and His greatest gift to man is that love that consumes us when we accept Christ. Paul ends this section of scripture with a word of admonishment for the believer. Live in unity, teach and impart wisdom to one another, sings songs and hymns with gratitude to God. Finally he says "whatever you do, whether in word of deed, do it all in the name of the Lord, giving thanks to the Father through Him". Our standard to see where we are is in Christ. As we look into the Word of God we find a standard of holiness and love that we can attain to only in Christ Jesus. When we compare ourselves to one another we might find ourselves to be better than some but we are told to find the standard of the Word and commit to following the Word and being led of the Holy Spirit. This is February and we often focus on love, just imagine if we could simply raise the standard of love among believers. Imaging if one church became committed to loving one another and others like Christ demonstrated, what a revolution we would see from that one small segment of Christianity. We cannot force others to raise the standard but I wonder if a renewed dedication to our love walk would cause others to also raise the standard? Might be a worthwhile experiment.

13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,14 having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you for the prize. Such a person goes into great detail about what he has seen, and his unspiritual mind puffs him up with idle notions.19 He has lost connection with the Head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.20 Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules:21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”?22 These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings.23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self‑imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

Disarmed the Powers and Authorities!
God made us alive in Christ, what a Savior! Jesus canceled our debt and reconciled us to the Father by going to the cross. He did much more than just save our souls though that would have been plenty. Isaiah 53 says it best:

3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken.9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.10 Yet it was the Lord's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.11 After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

As we can see from this passage He took our sickness and sorrow, was pierced for our sins, crushed for our iniquities, took punishment so we could have peace that passes all understanding, He was wounded so we can be healed, He took on our guilt and shame, our oppression and judgment, died so don't have to, went to a hopeless grave so we could be risen with Him, He has become our intercessor. I have often said Salvation was greater than we could ask for but when I look at the totality of what He did for me I am forever overwhelmed. Paul says in verse 15 "having disarmed powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them. Jesus didn't do anything part of the way, He didn't leave anything undone. When He cried it is finished it was finished. He didn't just fire a warning shot to the evil rulers of this words instead after defeating them completely He led them around and paraded their shame so all can know that we are no longer subject to their deceit if we are found in Christ. Paul goes on in verse 20 and reminds us that since we died and were raised with Him that we are not subjects to this world and it's ways. We don't have to handle, touch or taste. We are not under a system of legalism but He raised us and restored fellowship with the Father, that's right a relationship was made possible again. Not a series of works trying to please God but a relationship where we speak to God and He speaks to us. A relationship not unlike that with Moses who was said to be a friend of God. We can have many perspectives about God and most of them are true. We will never totally understand Him until we enter eternity but we can know Him and fellowship with Him. He is best portrayed as a loving Father looking out for His children. Even those of us who were not His children He has provided for our adoption and made us equal with His own. He is just and God and perfect in all His ways.

1 I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally.2 My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ,3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.4 I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine‑sounding arguments. 5 For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is. 6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. 9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form,10 and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.11 In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ,12 having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

Continue in Christ, rooted and built up in Him!

Paul expresses his concern for these people. Paul's concern is based around the fear that people will be deceived by false teachers sharing their own philosophy rather than the truth of God's Word. He reminds them not to revert back to traditions and other things of the world but rather to depend upon Christ and the gospel they had received. They are exhorted to continue in Christ having their roots in the gospel, to stay in Christ. "For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given the fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority." Paul begins to talk about the benefits of being and staying in Christ. All power was committed to Christ, He was given power and authority and in Him we are risen with Him. Risen with Christ by faith. Because Christ was raised from the dead those who find their identity in Him have overcome.

Colossians 1:14-29 NIV

24 Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church.25 I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness–26 the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. 27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. 29 To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.

Making known the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory!
This is the conclusion of the 1st chapter of the book of Colossians. Paul uses these few verses to clarify the purpose of the church and all believers, preaching Christ. He says that he has become a servant to the commission (great commission) of presenting God's Word in its fullness. God has given this mysterious message, a message that was kept secret prior to the coming of Jesus, to the church. We are all chosen to present the gospel. I mentioned this morning in church the necessity of sharing our testimonies. People don't need your 3 point sermons, they don't need a theologian they need a compassionate believer willing to share the hope of Christ. We should as Paul did become a slave to presenting the gospel, good news as often as we can. I encourage you as a believer to prepare your testimony and be ready to share at all times. In the grocery store, gas pump, over the phone, or wherever your may find yourself and feel the unction of the Holy Spirit. Paul concludes in verse 29 "to this end I labor, struggling with all His energy, which so powerfully works in me." His energy! Not my own but His energy. When we do things in our power and with our methods they don't produce but when we are led of the Lord and follow His direction we become fruitful believers. Invest your time and energy in the Kingdom it is only thing we ever do with eternal significance. Preach Jesus Christ and the hope of glory!

Colossians 1:15-23 NIV

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. 21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation– 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

The Supremacy of Christ!
Verse 15 begins "He is the image of hte invisible God, the firstborn of all creation" this is of course speaking of Christ who became flesh and lived among humanity. This passage is split into 2 sections, section 1 verses 15-20 which deals with the supremacy and qualification of Christ and section 2 verses 21-23 which reveal the completed work of Christ at Calvary. Paul begins with a glorious account of the person of Christ. He is the image of the invisible God, the creator of all things, he is before everything, and He holds everything together, He is the head of the body (the church), the beginning and firstborn from the dead (resurrected), He is supreme. What a Savior He is, worthy to be praised! Lord of Lords, King of Kings, the author and finisher of our faith. Majestic, mighty, glorious, powerful, Savior, etc... We could use superlatives like these all day and never truly sufficiently describe who He is. My definition and yours might not be identical but all who believe understand that without Him and the love He brought to planet earth we would still be living without hope. Our words will never do Him justice. The next section beginning in verse 21 Paul begins to describe the state we were in and still would be in if not for the Love of our Savior. We were alienated from God and enemies of God, hopeless because of the sin that separated us from the Father. Verse 22 tells of the hope we now have "but now He has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation. Now we know that satan is the accuser but once we are covered by the blood of Jesus we are no longer subject to these accusations. In fact, the accusations that were once true of us instantly become false when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. "Continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope" If we stand on the promise of the gospel we accepted when we confessed our sin and repented of our old ways, we are sealed in Christ Jesus and because we are blood bought we are not subject to the hopelessness we once had to endure. We are free in Christ!!! What precious promise these verses give, these are the Words that bring life! Glory in Christ Jesus, take time today to give Him praise for who He is and for what He has done. Though words cannot describe Him give Him praise today, worship Him in spirit and in truth!

Day 26

Today we begin the book of Colossians another letter from the Apostle Paul. As always the Apostle begins his letter with an introductory blessing and then begins to reprove, rebuke, and exhort. I hope you are enjoying reading these daily posts. The Bible says to study and show ourselves approved. God is please when we read and understand His Word and we are stronger in our walk of faith. It is a great treat to me to learn more and more about the character of our heavenly Father.

Colossians 1:1-14 NIV
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2 To the holy and faithful brothers in Christ at Colosse: Grace and peace to you from God our Father. 3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you,4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints–5 the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel6 that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God's grace in all its truth.7 You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, 8 and who also told us of your love in the Spirit. 9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

A Gospel that Bears Fruit:
Paul begins this letter with a great compliment of the faithfulness of these believers. He says that he has heard of their faith in Christ and love that brings hope. Paul then continues with "all over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since that day you heard it and understood God's grace in all its truth." Obviously the message of hope was growing and thriving among the churches and Paul was hearing about the fruit of the gospel. The gospel always has an affect when preached in love and truth. We are told to speak the truth in love and apparently that is what was happening in these days. There was more to the Apostle's success than just power and miraculous works. While I fervently believe in the gifts of the Spirit and enjoy operating in them I have found that the fruit that remains is that of love. The fruit of the Spirit needs to be evident in a believers life.

Galatians 5:22-25 NIV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,23 gentleness and self‑control. Against such things there is no law.24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

So not only should the gospel bear fruit but also those who have heard and received the gospel should bear the fruit of the Spirit. These are the things that set believers and non-believers apart. The bible proclaims that we are a peculiar people, foreigners and aliens. In other words we are different because we have receive the grace of God and His love has been shed abroad in our hearts. Paul says that these believers not only heard of God's grace but they understood it in all its truth. It is nearly impossible for us to truly understand the depth and magnitude of God's grace and it is often even more difficult to extend that love and grace to others. Apparently these people were truly walking in love and because of these fruit bearing believers the gospel was changing their world. This poses a challenging question to us today's believer are we seeing the fruit of the gospel we are preaching? If not we must ask has the gospel message lost its power? Or have we lost our ability to comprehend and extend the grace of God? Are we walking in love, joy, peace, etc... Do we show enough of the love and peace of God that others long to know Him also? We need power and certainly we should ask for gifts but God says the greatest of all the gifts is that of love. Since God hasn't changed then surely the message hasn't changed. We have a promise that if we bear fruit our gospel message will also bear fruit. It is love that drives us to talk to God in prayer about them rather than our neighbors in gossip. It is love that compels us to help others who need us rather than point them to some other organization that offers them help. It is love that challenges us to live godly lives and show the hope to others that are not just listening to our talk but also watching our walk.

Paul ends this section with we are praying that "you may live a life worthy of the Lord and my please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God. Being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience". Paul here spells out the benefits and necessity of bearing fruit and knowing God. The power comes when we walk faithfully and bear fruit. Are you bearing fruit? Do you exhibit the fruit of the Spirit in daily life. It's a challenging word that is making me take inventory of myself.

10 I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you have been concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it.11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
14 Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles.15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only;16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid again and again when I was in need.17 Not that I am looking for a gift, but I am looking for what may be credited to your account.18 I have received full payment and even more; I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. 19 And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. 20 To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 21 Greet all the saints in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me send greetings. 22 All the saints send you greetings, especially those who belong to Caesar's household. 23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

I have learned to be content!

I wish I could say what the Apostle writes here, I struggle with being content. I need to learn the secret the Apostle had learned, the secret of contentment. Paul is again rejoicing in the Lord. We all know God is our provider, we all know He is our healer, protector, savior, and on and on. However, when we get in the midst of a battle we quickly see our faith tested. Paul was saying he had fought enough battles and was now able to rest in the Lord. I have met people with that remarkable ability and I am striving toward that mark myself. Lord help us all to learn to trust in you in all things regardless of our circumstances or the evidence to the contrary. Paul continues with one of those great quotable verses "I can do all things through Christ" or in this version "I can do everything through Him who gives me strength." This again takes us back to trust and faith. When we're in faith and in agreement with God's Word we can do all things! ALLl THINGS! Why? Because when we are in faith and agreement with God's word we are in the perfect will of God.

Paul next begins to speak of their precious giving to him for his ministry journeys. Paul is thankful for their faith and support and then gives them a promise "and my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus." What a promise and it remains true today. Paul was letting these people know that because of their obedience and sowing of a seed to the ministry God would also bless them and take care of every need they have. Aren't you glad that we can say we know "Jehovah Jireh" the Lord my Provider. God truly does meet our needs as we remain faithful to His will and the calling He has placed upon us. Many times I have been bailed out at the last minute by an on time God. To God be the glory! Put your trust in Him be faithful in service and giving and you too will see that the righteous are never forsaken.

Are you content in Christ Jesus? Are you able to trust in difficult times as well as victorious ones? Put your hope in God, He never disappoints.

Daily Reading February 3 2010 from Philippians 4:1-9 NIV

Philippians 4:1-9 NIV

1 Therefore, my brothers, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, that is how you should stand firm in the Lord, dear friends!
2 I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to agree with each other in the Lord. 3 Yes, and I ask you, loyal yokefellow, help these women who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me–put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

On to chapter 4 of the Letter to the Philippians. I want to begin today with verse 6 where Paul tells us how to avoid anxiety. Anxiety, worry, fear and many other areas of mental fatigue plague the church today. Paul hits on the answer to all these issues, prayer. He says "in everything", that's right prayer in every situation is the answer. He says pray the prayer of petition with thanksgiving while presenting our requests to God. Have you ever been right in the middle of an issue and you knew God had given you the victory. At times like that we can begin to thank God although there is no evidence of our deliverance. Paul is taking this one step further, he is saying pray with thanksgiving always! Present your request and then by faith thank God for the answer. We might as well because without God there is no answer! He proceeds in verse 7 with "and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." So when we pray in faith, thanking God for the answer we can then rest peacefully and no longer worry! This is difficult to learn but when we truly "cast our cares" we don't have to carry them any longer. We give them to God and He can certainly deal with any issue we give to Him. This requires trust. This overwhelming peace is beyond our understanding. It is the kind of peace that non-believers cannot understand. When they see us resting in peace in the midst of a battle they see our confidence in our Father. This peace "will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus" there is the answer to much of our mental anguish trusting in God and giving Him our cares, big or small.

"Finally, brother, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable" think about these things. Our thought life can control us but it wasn't meant to be that way. The bible tells us we have the mind of Christ. When we renew our minds daily with the Word of God our faith is built up and we can overcome the negatives. Thinking and meditating on God's Word is encouraging and transforming.

2 Corinthians 10:5 ...and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Paul ends this section with put into practice what you have seen me do. Walking in the Word is our answer, it brings about such a peace and enables us to trust in God.

Many years ago shortly after Gena and I were saved we faced one of the biggest tests of our lives. Gena was pregnant with Sarah our third daughter when the doctor reported to her that the pregnancy would have to be aborted. She called me very upset and told me the news. I was working that day but knew I needed to go home and be with her. As I was standing outside overcome with emotions and thoughts of hopelessness I knew I needed to pray but didn't have any words to pray. Finally, I cried out Jesus! I repeated that name over and over and suddenly a peace came over me. That moment gave me strength and confidence as I went home to try and comfort Gena. Later that evening our Pastor came over and prayed with us. As Gena went back to the doctor later in the week she was told she was having a perfectly normal pregnancy. We didn't know God's Word like we do today, we didn't know any eloquent prayers to pray, we weren't noted people of great faith. All we knew was that Jesus cared and God understood the love we had for our child. In our immaturity and despair God accepted a prayer as simple as "Jesus help me". While we may be more mature in our faith and know and understand God's Word better today there are still times when all we can do is cry out Jesus help me. That cry always seems to work. It is because of this that I can focus on the goodness of God and think on these things. Take your thoughts captive and remember all the great things God has done. Try it and see if you don't find peace even in the storm.

Philippians 3:12-21 NIV

12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. 15 All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. 16 Only let us live up to what we have already attained. 17 Join with others in following my example, brothers, and take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you.18 For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead!
Each time I read verses 12-13 I realize just how far I have to go and then I remember perfection will not come in this lifetime. The Apostle Paul writer of 2/3's of the New Testament, greatest missionary we have ever heard of is saying he still has work to do. In comparison, I don't measure up! The most difficult part of all this has to be verse 13 "forgetting what is behind". Paul is pointing to what is ahead or what is happening right now, today. Yesterday is gone and we cannot redo it. We all have things in our past that we are not proud of and so must of us can relate to this verse in that way. We can fall into condemnation of self focusing on all our past failures and my list is long there. We can focus on how spiritual we used to be or what God once did and miss what He is trying to do now. We can get so caught up in how we used to feel and forget that we are on a faith journey and not one controlled by feeling. We can begin to program God based upon what we expect! Perhaps we saw God move in the past and now we think we know how He will move in the future. We have the mind of Christ but we do not know all about God! His ways are higher than ours. If we aren't careful we can miss out on what God is doing just because we have preconceived ideas about how He should be doing it. We can seek God for a situation or stand on a promise and miss Him as He gives the answer. While God never changes I have learned that He rarely handles the same situations in my life in the same manner. Paul goes on in the next verse to remind us to stay true to our purpose and then ends the passage with a forward looking promise of eternity with the Lord.

Paul says "we eagerly await a Savior" a heavenly Savior who will come for His own. That Savior "will transform our lowly bodies", what a promise. Paul is reminding the Philippians and you and I of the great promise we have since we are children of the Living God. Paul is getting our attention back on the goal ahead. Eternity with Him that is the ultimate goal. We have much to do here but must also keep an eye on what God is doing and the promise that lies ahead. Stay on track, don't lose site of the goal! Press on!

Daily Reading February 1 2010 from Philippians 3:1-11 NIV

Day 22

Congratulations! If you have been reading these daily posts for the past 21 days you have now developed a habit. Physicians suggest that it takes 21 days of repeating the same thing over and over to form a new habit. This theory appears to have originated with a plastic surgeon, Dr. Maxwell Maltz. Dr. Maltz noted that it took an average of 21 days for an amputee to quit having phantom feeling after amputation. This research has continued and appears to have been confirmed by many. So, if you have been reading your bible daily through these posts you have just formed a very good and beneficial habit. Now keep it up!


Philippians 3:1-11 NIV
1 Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you. 2 Watch out for those dogs, those men who do evil, those mutilators of the flesh.3 For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh– 4 though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more:5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless. 7 But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.8 What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ–the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.10 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,11 and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Rejoice in the Lord!
This first sentence is the headline of today’s reading. Paul puts it very clearly that the Lord is the only reason for rejoicing. I cannot help but think about those who do not know Christ. They cannot have true joy! Without Christ we can think we are free, have peace, and are happy but once you really know Him it becomes obvious that without Him we can do nothing. Paul begins this passage by warning believers not to be deceived by men who want to put them back under the law. Paul uses strong language calling these deceivers dogs. He goes on to write that we can have no confidence in the flesh but must rejoice in what Christ did.

If anyone had reason to boast about his credentials, education, or bloodline Paul certainly did. He states his pedigree in the verses of our reading. Paul was a Pharisee taught by the best. There was a time that Paul walked around with great prestige and authority because of what he had accomplished. Things however changed on the road to Damascus when he realized just how little he knew about the God he claimed to serve. Paul describes this change in verse 8 when he says “I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord”. He says it was “for His sake I have lost all things.” Paul isn’t complaining or lamenting but rather rejoicing in Christ that he has been set free from the legalistic religious way he once lived. He goes on to compare all the things he had earned to garbage. Paul had lived a religious and even zealous life where he had brought all his talents and abilities to God expecting God to bless his earthly efforts. This attitude was that of a Pharisee. The Damascus encounter changed not only the name of this man but also the attitude of his heart. Paul had come to realize that he had nothing at all to offer God and that is was only by the gift of God that he could have a relationship with God. Paul had come full circle and rejected the self-righteous training he had once enjoyed. He had lost the prideful way of living and was not walking humbly under the yoke of Jesus, his savior.

The passage ends with “I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection”. That should be our aim as well, to know Christ and only Christ. Paul would say elsewhere that He only knew Christ and the resurrection. That was the purpose of his life. The life changing power of God had forever changed this man! Have you been changed? Have you had your Damascus road encounter with the living God or are you walking in self trying to do all the right things to be accepted by God? We need to learn as the Apostle did that we are only acceptable because of Jesus. Rejoice today because your sins are forgiven and if they aren’t repent and then rejoice. Jesus paid it all!
